Pending Legislation

This week and next, MCRGO E'News is reviewing several pending bills in the Michigan Legislature that MCRGO anticipates may move in the weeks and months ahead. A complete list of pending Michigan firearms legislation can be found on our website HERE.

Pistol Free Zones
Bills: Senate Bill 584 & House Bill 4854

Summary: Both these bills seek to reduce the impact pistol free zones have on concealed pistol license holders but neither eliminate the zones altogether. Senate Bill 584 would provide a general exemption from concealed pistol free zones to any CPL holder who takes additional training. House Bill 4854 would exempt CPL holders automatically without additional training but would continue to impose the zones on non-CPL holders.

Status: Both bills are in their committee of origin and have yet to be considered.

Foster Family Households
Bills: Senate Bill 527 & House Bill 4955

Summary: Both bills seek to prevent the state from denying foster placement to families that own guns. HB 4955 is a simple ban on the consideration of gun ownership for foster family placement. SB 527 bans consideration of firearms ownership but also imposes restrictions on firearms carry and storage by foster families not otherwise imposed on other households. SB 527 also provides immunity for the state.

Status: SB 527 is pending before the full Senate. HB 4955 is in its committee of origin awaiting a hearing.

Provisional CPLs for 18-20 Year Olds
Bill: Senate Bill 366

Summary: The legislation would allow an 18-20 year old to apply for a provisional concealed pistol license that would be valid until they turn 21. The license would cost the same as a standard CPL and provide the same abilities within Michigan. However it would not be recognized by most other states.

Status: SB 366 is pending before the full Senate.
