Rumblings in the Desert. Winter Range 2018 FINAL ENTRY

Recommended Posts

The next group of photos is work on the train depot.  First the frames for the various panels are constructed.  Then plywood is glued and screwed to the frames.  The windows are cut with a router after the plywood is attached to the frames.  This makes lining up everything a lot easier.  The depot will have a center section with two freight wings, one on either side of the main building.  The last photo shows the roofs for the wings.  (The thread just switched to another page.  Make sure to look at the bottom of page 1 to see additional photos.)

Now an update on the shooter numbers.  In a three day match with three waves you have 36 posses.  20 people on each posse equals 720 shooters and this is what is normally considered as "full."  Raising the number to 21 per posse adds 36 shooters or 756 shooters total and each additional posse member adds another 36 shooters.  To minimize the possibility of having a backup on any of the posses we try to keep the shooter number at 756.  As recently as five years ago there were three or four no-shows.  The past two years that number has grown to 20 or 30.  So in order to make sure there are 756 actual shooters shooting the match as cancellations are received shooters from the waiting list are added and we have started adding a buffer to make sure the final number is as close as possible to 756.  The shooter numbers thus far are well over 700 but applications are still being received and people added to the posses.  SASS is definitely getting older as evidenced by the increasing number of no-shows and the fact that 22 people have signed up for Grand Patron.  That is the over 80 folks!  The biggest categories are Senior, Elder Statesman and Cattle Barron.  The categories all have sufficient numbers except for the following:

Classic Cowgirl -- 2 shooters

Lady Frontier Cartridge Duelist -- 2 shooters

Lady Fronter Cartridge Gunfighter -- 1 shooter

So if anymore ladies wish to shoot in these categories send in your applications or contact Sunshine Kay to change categories if you are already registered.

Finally, the website has been updated with a Who's Coming list.

Simply amazing...

Swiss kid has done several pieces of art for WR over the years such as the old ferry boat.

Kid if your following this post could you please post the pictures of the props you have built in the past. He builds these props by himself at his residence.

Thanks for your support and dedication to sass.

Swiss Kid as his name implies is from Switzerland.  He has built some amazing props over the years.  Many fit together like a jigsaw puzzle with interlocking pieces.  Here is the riverboat.  Only Swiss knows how it fits together.

Another major piece of construction Swiss has single handedly built is the Grand Hotel.  Here is Swiss in the doorway of the partially completed hotel.  A fork lift is needed to put on the upper levels of the hotel.  Next is the mostly finished hotel.  When finished it includes a sundial and the sundial is adjusted so it tells the actual local time!

While going through the photos looking for a couple of Swiss Kid props I came across this photo of a scary moment.  When the Saloon (which is an actual three dimensional saloon) was being built it was decided to try and build the entire front in one piece.  When it was being raised it started to flex a bit more than expected.  It was a tense time until the front was finally fully upright.

A lot of credit needs to go to Hopalong Harry. He’s a big help and a true craftsman. He also knows how the props go together, so be nice to him.

We are at 750+ applications.  As previously noted we try to have 756 actual shooters, as opposed to 756 registrations, so if you have not already done so send in your application as we will probably send out confirmations to approximately 780 people.

Just once, 'fore I die, lemme go to Winter Range.

It is so unfair that I have not been there. Hubby has been there. Then, friends paid his way and took him. I guess that was a perk of being your home range's contender. I'm a contender, for last place.

Went out to the range this past Wednesday through Saturday.   It was brutal on Wednesday.  Only got to 72.  The other three days it was between 75 and 78 with clear skies and no wind.  HOWEVER, this is WINTER Range.  The weather in January and February can vary greatly.  The difference in weather between the first week of February and the last week can be amazing.  The Phoenix area is known as a winter resort area.  But be prepared for virtually anything.  What you will typically find at Ben Avery the last week of February is that it is cold (30s and 40s) and windy early in the morning.  By 10:00 am the wind usually dies down and the temps will be in the high 60s or low 70s.  There are well over 750 shooters registered and there will be plenty of vendors to entice your cash out of your wallets and purses.  The props are never fully set-up until a few days before the match begins as other events are constantly taking place at Ben Avery.  Over the next few weeks we will partially set up the new and refurbished props so we can paint them.  Then they will be placed in trailers so they will be ready to roll out onto the range so set-up can begin on Wednesday, February 14.  By Sunday, February 18 the bare desert will be transformed into Winter Range and registration will open around noon on Sunday.

Looking at the news the weather is scary for a lot of the country.  Hope you all are doing well.  Still in the mid to high 70s here in the desert.  Fingers crossed the last week of February remains nice.  Here is a shot out the windshield for my trip to the range today.  This time of the year hot air ballons are everywhere.  The range public entrance is about 100 yards past the bottom of the bridge.  The entrance to the area where Winter Range is held is about 1.5 miles further down the road.  Tomorrow (Saturday) should again be in the 70s which is about perfect for painting and there is a LOT of painting to do.  I will take some photos of the work party and post some on Sunday.

The weather for yesterday's (Saturday) work party was sunny and 75 so good progress was made.  Perfect day for painting so we did a LOT of painting.  First photo, props are hauled out of their containers.  Second photo they are laid out on the ground for repainting.  Third photo, getting the sprayer ready to spray a batch of props.  Fourth photo, the base coats are sprayed with a large spray gun.  Fifth photo, the other colors and trim are then applied by hand.

In another part of the yard the stage coach is becoming recognizable.  First photo, one of the drawings with dimensions.  Second photo, installing the iron roof railings.  Third and fourth photos, building the coach interior.  Fifth photo, giving the wheels another coat of paint.  Sixth photo, the coach chasis.  Seventh photo, the partially completed driver's section laid in front of the body so they can be covered in the (unlikely) case it rains before next weekend.

Everyone on the board is constantly scrounging around looking for things that might be used in the match.  Blackjack found these street lights.  They were rewired and installed on bases so they can be staked down.  They will be somewhere on the range during the match.  We have the tops to the lights and the entire light will be painted at the next work party.

Do we get to shoot from the stagecoach?

The design is evolving.  But, yes you will shoot from the stage coach.  However, because of the way it is being set up you will be standing up.  We think everyone will find it a fun prop.
