It was one of the largest work parties that we have had this year, lots of hands makes the work go quickly, stage coach is coming together nicely as well as the new train depot building.

Thanks for all that attended and helped with the work.

Larsen, unless I've missed it, I don't see any scheduling of the Wild Bunch Side Matches or the Wild Bunch Awards ceremony?

Pretty sure I saw that scheduled for Saturday night.

Edit: Yep, I just checked. 6:50 Saturday night in the main tent.

Time is flying.  The main tent starts to go up on February 1.  Range set-up begins on February 14.  There is still a lot of work to do in the next couple of weeks.  Painting has been a priortiy while the weather stays sunny and warm enough to paint.  First picture, the dozens of cacti get a facelift.  Second photo, the needles on the cactus get applied using a stencil.  Third photo, you can't have a cactus without a cactus wren nesting in a hole.  Last photo, many of the props used in prior years are modified and repainted and used in new scenarios.

We found two old street lights in a dump.  They were rewired and the bulbs replaced with bulbs whose filaments look like more like an open frame.  Photo one, the lights get prepainted.  Second photo, the lights are set up on their bases and tested.  They WORK and will be placed on one of the scenarios.

With 756 shooters (and many on the waiting list) Winter Range has to have reliable steel targets.  They are inspected each year and any damaged targets are replaced and suspicious welds are ground down and rewelded.  New targets are purchased each year and old ones rotated out of use to make sure there are no range delays caused by bad steel.  Extra targets are also placed behind the facadss just in case there is a failure so the target can be quickly replaced.  Photos one and two.  A professional welder is brought out, since there is no high amperage power in the storage yard, to inspect, repair and modify the steel.  Third photo, some of the brand new targets acquired for the Wild Bunch match.

Some of the new props are getting ready for final construction and paint.  Photo one, the first mock-up of the new train station.  Ultimately it will be a main building with two wings.  Photo two, the driver section of the stage coach being finished.  Photo three, the drivers box attached to the coach body.  Photo four, checking the fit of the roof iron.

Meanwhile on the other side of town awards have been arriving for the past several weeks.  The Winter Range category winner awards are Remington bronze statutes.  They arrive in a large box that weighs almost 1,000 pounds.  Each is wrapped like a turkey with bubble wrap, a layer of tape, more bubble wrap and another layer of tape.  It takes about 15 minutes to unwrap each statue.  The bubble wrap has to be saved since the statues must be rewrapped and taken to the range after the walnut bases and data plates are installed.  The second and third place trophies are also mounted on a walnut base with and a data plate attached.  Then they have to be rewrapped and reboxed and taken to the range.  This year the side match awards are going to be buckles.

Winter Range is coming up QUICK!  This will be the final entry as the Rough Riders, Rangers and volunteers will be consumed with the final preparations for Winter Range the next eight days.  Set-up of the range begins on February 14.  If you are in town stop by and look or lend a hand.  The main tent and vendor area started going up on February 1.

The stage coach turned out to be a very complicated prop.  Work on it will continue right up to the start of set-up.  The main body gets a base coat of red paint.  The trim will be painted in gold and the lettering has to be applied.  The various parts of the coach get their first coat of paint.  The complete coach goes together for the first time.  The coach body is set on the suspension straps for a test fit.

A stage coach needs horses so some are begun.  They will look pretty good once the ears. tails and other parts are added and painted.  Some panels are prepared that will serve as the hallway for the entry into the main tent.  It will be fairly dark in the hall but it is nevertheless detailed with fake adobe blocks and other details

Dozens of new targets were acquired for this year's matches.  The white targets are new Wild Bunch targets.  During the work party a truck arrived bringing some new knock down targets.  We look forward to seeing you all at Winter Range 2018.  The match is still full at 756 with about 40 people on the waiting list.  The weather has been in the 80's so things are looking GREAT!
