Jabez Cowboy,SASS # 50129
What you have is a load related problem ... Yesterday I fired one of my .38-40 rounds in a Uberti 73 chambered in .44-40 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Hit the target.... Out of the gun came a perfectly formed .44-40 case showing little IF any blow-bye .... And I am a Smith familiar with Cowboy Guns and others ..... Amarillo Rattler
I anneal my 44-40 brass after each wet tumbling. I know others will say that is excessive, but the brass remains the same "soft" for each reloading/firing. And, I have no blow by with less than full BP loads, revolver and rifle. Revolver recoil shield and rifle receiver/bolt are without fouling. Amarillo Rattler
