Three Foot Johnson Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 I had just finished spraying out a tank of weed spray and saw a big plume of black smoke a couple miles away, so I took off cross country to find the source. Two guys on a motorcycle had hit a deer on the highway. The motorcycle was a good 200' from the point of impact and on fire. The riders are suffering from some serious road rash, but the only fatality was the deer.
Dantankerous Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Deer most likely cause its own fatality. Rider OK?
Three Foot Johnson Posted September 6, 2017 Author Posted September 6, 2017 They were both scraped up plenty good, one with a probable broken hand/wrist, and transported to the hospital, but they'll be alright.
Dantankerous Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 I have seen deer vs motorcycle videos on YouTube where the bike slices the deer in two and the rider maintains control of the bike, does not wreck, but comes to a rather abrupt stop, heartrate slightly elevated, I am sure.
Blackwater 53393 Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 I've lost a couple of friends when they encountered deer in this fashion!! Nobody wins!!

And a couple other very very close calls. I don't ride anymore but when I did it was to and from work and generally before sunrise and after sunset. High deer traffic time. Always had to have my head on a swivel but never got too comfortable. Never could figure out what was worse around here, trying to avoid deer or the traffic in town. Sold the bike and have been breathing easier ever since.
Pat Riot Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Wow! I have been lucky in regards to deer but I do pay attention. I have hit 2 dogs but never a deer. Both dogs ran away. 1 had some broken ribs. I talked to his owner. The other just ran off. I never saw him / her again.
Eyesa Horg Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 I wrecked a real nice Harley on a deer once. Only slight road rash on elbow and scraped jacket! Cop gave me funny look when I said I wanted the deer if they could find it. Told 'em after what it did to my bike, I wanted to eat it!!
Trailrider #896 Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 Hitting a deer even in a small car ain't no joke. A boss of mine hit a deer with his Camero! Killed the deer, but really messed up the vehicle. He was lucky and wasn't hurt!
Tequila Jim #14501 Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 Locally a lady on a motorcycle hit a bull. She did not survive, don't know about the bull. Regards. TJ

Sorry I just had to say that. we have a problem with moose collisions. At one time there were billboards with the count of the number of fatalities due to moose collisions. Now they just indicate that there have been many. The problem is that when encountered at night, the body is usually above your headlights. Also they are generally dark and they think they own the UNIVERSE. They won't move. They guideline is, if collision is inevitable, aim your vehicle at the hind legs, then the carcass will likely go over your vehicle instead of through your windshield, killing you.

I have a friend who used to live in NH. He said the exact same thing. In fact, he used that tactic one night and survived. Small car vs moose. Ugh.
Tennessee Stud Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 This whole thread... is disheartinin'... with a deer jumpin' in front. Never had that happen 'fore.... ts

Clueless Bob Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 Had our neighbor and his wife hit a cow. The cow walked away. The motorcycle ended up on the side of the road. Both of them were knocked out and laying in the road. Did I mention this was at night. The cow was black. Luckily, no one came driving down the road with them still laying there. They came too and took themselves to the hospital. Some road rash, broken collarbone, and a concussions was their only injury. The motorcycle. It was fixed and sold. They both decided they were getting too old and getting injured was taking too long to heal!!

How did you deduce that? OK. Hunnerts of feet from the impact zone... ya gotcha self a crashed-a$$ motorbike... two injured riders... and a dead deer back at the scene up the road... 'Round here in Tennessee... we got some folks that will stage some awful, mighty venison-cravin's.... and do just 'bout anything to satisfy it... but I could be wrong? ts ps... Tankdankerous... hope you know I am just joshin' wi'ya. That pic scares the hell outta me.

Just sold my Harley after moving to West Virginia where the deer outnumber the residents. not worth it I won't sell out and I won't quit!! I hit a huge 90 lb. dog a few years ago. It was after dark and I hit him dead center. It bent the forks back to where the tire was within an inch of the frame, but I didn't go down. I went over the dog and managed to get stopped. I turned around and went home. The next morning I ordered new fork tubes and in two days I was back on the road. The dog didn't fare well at all. Nobody claimed the corpse and the county had to pick it up. If I end it all while riding, at least I'll have gone out doing something I love to do!!
Knarley Bob Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 Try a black bird between the eyes at over 90 mph............... If I had found my sun glasses that morning I would be dead now. Had to wear a full face cuz it had a shield on it..............that made the difference.

Had a Starling hit me in the chest at about that speed on the way to work one morning. Knocked the breath outta' me and I was covered in gore! I was a few minutes late for work and I had a BIG bruise on my chest for a week or two!! Worse yet! I was struck by a bird in an open cockpit dragster at nearly 170 mph. It was right at the finish line and I was pulling the parachute when it happened. I managed to get the car stopped before I passed out. When my crew got there they saw all of the gore and figured I was dead!! Scared 'em to death when I groaned and moved my head!!!
