Garrison Joe, SASS #60708 Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 (edited) On Vaqueros, yep, about 450 F will melt the low-temp solder (similar to Brownell's HiForce 44). Might want to put some anti-scale putty in the rifling before torching the barrel. Better yet, see a gun smith who knows how. Getting it off is easy compared to soldering a new sight back into the slot. I have done it, on stainless guns even, but it's a real job the first time. Out of curiosity why do you want to replace it? replace it with what? This is a New Model Blackhawk front sight. If it were me I would mill off the old blade, mill a slot in the base and solder in a new blade. Quote
Capt Kirk Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 Didn't like the sights on Blackhawk, but bought em anyway for lifetime durability @ $400 each.... Replaced the rear sight with fixed brass sight made out of solid brass door stopper. Capt Kirk Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 Hello Rootin, Got tired of the Colt-45 guys makin fun of my 38s, so I went on a hunt..... Those are a pair of extinct Vaquero 44mags - took me a several years of Gunbroker trolling to acquire a matching pair at a price I could afford..... 2nd one was a fellow SASS shooter retiring from big-gun shootin.... Recently got a bag of 1000 44-brass & a Lee Pro 1000 in 44mag to afford shootin them a bit more..... Yes 44-40 is more authentic, but already had some 44mag double action revolvers (redhawk) and didn't care to jump into another caliber logistics path... Gunbroker trolling also rewarded me with a pair of 38spl 1860 OpenTops w 8in barrels.... took a bit of amateur smithin to get-em smooth & reliable for gunfighter shootin....but it was fun an rewarding... soft pull & hair trigger :-) (have to use Federal Primers with those ol leaf hammer springs) Quote
