Californians - Gear Up, They're At It Again

This week the California Legislature reconvened from Summer recess and have wasted no time in continuing to push their anti-gun agenda. Yesterday, not only did the Assembly pass anti-gun bill SB 464, but also introduced a symbolic resolution, AJR 24, urging Congress to not enact S. 446, H.R. 38, or any other similar “concealed carry reciprocity” legislation. 

Below is an update on the firearm-related bills still moving through the legislative process.  Please use our take action button below to send an email to your state legislators respectfully urging them to OPPOSE AJR 24, AB 7, AB 424, SB 464 and SB 497.  If you would like to call your State Senate or Assembly Member, click hereto find their phone number. 

Do not give up the fight!  Continue to CALL and EMAIL your State Legislators. They need to hear from you as we enter the final weeks of the 2017 legislative session.   

Currently Pending in the Assembly: 

Assembly Joint Resolution 24 introduced on August 24 is pending a committee referral.  Sponsored by Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-53), AJR 24 would urge the Congress of the United States to not enact S. 446, H.R. 38, or any other similar “concealed carry reciprocity” legislation that would require the State of California to recognize the concealed carry standards of every other state. 

Senate Bill 497 was sent to the suspense file in the Assembly Appropriations Committee and will likely be considered later in the month.  Sponsored byAnthony Portantino (D-25), SB 497would extend California’s one-handgun-a-month limitation to all guns.  It is obvious this legislation is another attempt to place more barriers on those exercising their rights and does nothing to address the criminal misuse of firearms or firearm trafficking. Criminals who generally acquire their firearms through illicit means will continue to ignore California’s stringent laws including limitations on the number of firearms that can be acquired within a 30 day time period. 

Currently Pending in the Senate:

Senate Bill 464 passed the Assembly on August 24 and is eligible concurrence vote in the Senate.Sponsored by Senator Jerry Hill (D-13), SB 464 would further increase the mandatory storage and security requirements for licensed firearms dealers. California already has some of the strictest laws in the country regarding how dealers must store and secure firearms.  This bill simply places more costs and mandates on law-abiding business owners.  

Assembly Bill 7 was sent to the suspense file in the Senate Appropriations Committee and will likely be considered later in the month.  Sponsored by Mike Gipson (D-64), AB 7 would further restrict the open carry of an unloaded firearm on public property by including unincorporated areas as prohibited places.  

Assembly Bill 424 is on third reading and eligible for a vote on the Senate Floor.   Sponsored by Assembly Member Kevin McCarty (D-7), AB 424 would remove the authority of a school district superintendent, his or her designee, or equivalent school authority to provide written permission for a person to possess a firearm within a school zone.

Thank you. I'm doing what I can, which is mostly trying to watch our Legislature and spreading the word about their anti-civil rights bills.  And, of course, writing to my members of the Legislature.
