Ranger Clayton Conagher #43872 Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Howdy, now that my kids are shooting with me I have 3 times the stuff to lug around at each match. Right now all of our long guns fit on my gun cart but we have their ammo and whatnots to bring along plus possibly a small cooler. I want to convert a Radio Flyer type wagon into a covered wagon. I'm sure I'm not the first person to attempt this. Does anyone here have some pictures of one they have made that I can use as a reference when creating my own? Also any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance....Ranger

Goody, SASS #26190 Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Wagons are very top heavy and will tip over easily.
StirrupTrouble Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Contact Fence Cutter in Iowa. He made his and it works well
Mountain Man Champ Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 I made one out of a radio Flyer wagon. It is not covered. I made the axles a little bit wider, so it would not be so top-heavy. Makes it more stable over rough terrain.
Tulsey, SASS#11236 Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 Too many years ago to count, I had a covered wagon factory made kit on my red flyer wagon. it was a simple thing which had a 1 x 4 that was inside each long side of the wagon. There were three holes in each 1 x 4, maybe quarter inch and I would guess an inch deep or so. The kit had three wire hoops that were formed so one went in the front holes, one in the middle holes and one in the rear holes of the 1 x 4. i don't remember if they were exactly alike or the front and rear had some outward slope or not. A white cotton fit over the hoops and tied somehow at the bottom. If I were going to build something like that I would add a couple of cross pieces of wood to keep the sides in place. Maybe someone remembers these better than I do
Shorty Jack Hammer Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 At Westmatch in WA State last weekend one of our shooters had a wagon style cart. Not made out of a radio flyer, but was actually a bit wider. It tipped over on the uneven ground first stage of the day spilling his long guns and everything thing else out on the ground.

I've seen people off and on using assorted carts made from wagons for years but never saw one tip over. That doesn't mean much. Obviously terrain is very much a factor, so the OP should keep that in mind.
Lorelei Longshot, SASS #44256 Life Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 Had a gun cart made from a wagon that had pneumatic tires and wooden sides. The gun rack was set up in the middle of the wagon with a box on the back to sit on. Think it was a Radio Flyer or some garden cart. The gun rack could fold down to get in the car. Had wooden sides that could be removed if necessary, but we left them on. Used it for several years before getting a Rugged Gear cart. Also had a covered wagon that came with a green wagon cover and padded seat inside, but never made it into a gun cart. Also had pneumatic tires and wooden rails on the side. Many people use the Rugged Gear carts or make their own from old baby joggers. You might want to consider making one like that. Be aware that almost any gun cart might tip over given the right circumstances whether it is a 4 wheeled wagon, a fancy wooden gun cart built by some of our very talented shooters that are talented craftsmen, one made from baby jogger, or a Rugged Gear cart. Terrain and other factors make the difference.
Pat Riot Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 If you do this Ranger, make sure you make a steering stop so the front wheels cannot rotate so far that when you pull on the tongue the wagon flips over. Been there, done that....bummer....

The two wheelers were hard to pull as well but more controllable
Ranger Clayton Conagher #43872 Posted August 12, 2017 Author Posted August 12, 2017 Howdy everyone! Thanks for the advice, this is what my wife and I made this week. It's still a work in progress. Much obliged.
Linn Keller, SASS 27332, BOLD 103 Posted August 13, 2017 Posted August 13, 2017 Tractor Supply sold wagons with wire hoops and a red nylon covered wagon style cover. Used it with cased guns but was never comfortable with having to keep the rifle & shotgun vertical, case it in the vertical, then into the wagon; move to next stage; bring cased gun out, remove case, keep vertical ... went back to my regular gun cart.
