Thing is, there shouldn't be ANY debate:

The First 10 Amendments to the
Constitution as Ratified by the States

December 15, 1791

Preamble

Congress OF THE United States
begun and held at the City of New York, on Wednesday
the Fourth of March, one thousand seven hundred and eighty nine.

THE Conventions of a number of the States having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best insure the beneficent ends of its institution

RESOLVED by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled, two thirds of both Houses concurring, that the following Articles be proposed to the Legislatures of the several States, as Amendments to the Constitution of the United States, all or any of which Articles, when ratified by three fourths of the said Legislatures, to be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of the said Constitution; viz.:

ARTICLES in addition to, and Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America, proposed by Congress, and ratified by the Legislatures of the several States, pursuant to the fifth Article of the original Constitution.

and, according to SCOTUS, the entire Bill of Rights is off the political table:

Quote

"The very purpose of a Bill of Rights was to withdraw certain subjects from the vicissitudes of political controversy, to place them beyond the reach of majorities and officials and to establish them as legal principles to be applied by the courts. One's right to life, liberty, and property, to free speech, a free press, freedom of worship and assembly, and other fundamental rights may not be submitted to vote; they depend on the outcome of no elections."

: Robert H. Jackson, US Supreme Court Justice West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943)

I agree, that gentleman made a very solid case against the anti-civil rights capons.

A very unfortunate truth.  Some of us are sticking around trying to fight the constant attacks on civil rights.

I tell ya, sometimes the temptation to just say "Eff it!" and surrender is almost overwhelming, but then knowing that CA is one of the front lines of the battle, I stiffen my resolve and keep on hammering my reps with letters and emails.

One hope is House bill HR 3576 (I rather like the bill number, easy to remember 357 6 shooter).  Granted, the capons in Sacramento would try to ignore it if it passes, but it would give a huge advantage to legal challenges of our draconian laws.
