Your picture answered a question that has plagued me since childhood. One of my other uncles came home on leave, around 1944.. He had on his uniform, was wearing the same type of shoes as your uncle in the picture. I often is they were GI or something he just wore home. The service shoes were rough out and ugly. The early WWII service shoe was a smooth out with a captoe, very stylish IMHO. Then in 1943 the rough out service boot was issued but was strictly for "overseas" wear and forbidden with service dress. Soldiers did purchase all kinds of shoes from various sources.
