FOUND THE PROBLEM think my Marlin ejector is worn out, thoughts??

SEE LOWER POST

Marlin CBC, 10+ years old, .45 Colt

Ejector is original

yesterday empty cases were hanging up on extractor.  If I turned rifle 45° so port is more or less pointing down cases would eject.  Last one hang up to point had to call it 'broke'

thinking ejector spring is too weak to do the job any more

thanks

Have you pulled the bolt and inspected the ejector?  The spring could be broken.  I've had that happen on one of my Marlins.  But it was 116 years old!

Pull your bolt out and 1st- check the ejector spring to see if it's broke, if it is replace it then go to

2nd step. Take your extractor out of the bolt and clean the extractor hole in the bolt very good along with the extractor. After both are clean reinstall the extractor and check the tension it has on a loaded round while on the bolt face. If it will hold the loaded round on the bolt face with out it falling off then it's good. If not then adjust the tension by lightly bending the end of the flat spring. That's about the only two things that can cause your described problem.

The big clue here is 45lc. The blowby back into the extractor hole is usually the problem. I see the same thing with the 92's even though the extractor is on top it's in a raised position when fired and that crub build up under it until it no longer hooks the rims

I just started shooting the Marlin 1894 in 44WCF and it's remarkable how much cleaner it is than the Marlin in 45 Colt.  The chamber on the 44WCF is well sized that the brass is hardly blown out and come out clean on the outside after firing.

Here's just a little more info that I got some experience in. If you do have a bad ejector, don't throw the old one away. Mine broke in my .45Colt 1894 Marlin. I bought an original Marlin replacement from Midway. After inspecting the new one, I can clearly see that it was a MIM part and the finish of it didn't look good. I replaced it and it worked fine except it now threw my brass forward instead of to the side like my old one did. What I ended up doing is just using the spring from the new one and installed it on my old non MIM and better  finished ejector. I'm now back to dropping the brass were I want them to fall.

I used the flat spring that pushes the rear part of a two-piece firing pin down.  This is an early model Marlin 1894 before they started putting JM stamp on them.^_^

finally got time to pull bolt.  Turns out the ejector's spring was bent just about flat.

I went on and bent it back to its normal position and will try it to see if it holds shape before the next match.

do have 2 new replacements if needed

p.s. the extractor and its hole were pretty dirty, too; cleaned them while I had the bolt out

If it was flat, don't be surprised when you find it that way again or broken the next time you remove the bolt.

don't forget to clean out the extractor too

I don't know if this will help in the future, but since the ejector is compressed continuously when bolt is closed during storage between matches. I remove mine until its time for a match, a simple 2 minute or less job and keeps the ejector from being compressed and weakened. MT

thanks for all the input and ideas.  One of the reasons I like this site.

I know the ejector spring may be shot--that's why I'm trying it out a practice tomorrow

did clean out the ejector hole and ejector--probably a bit late in doing that as it was pretty bad.

Make up some 'dummy' rounds and give it a try. If all goes well-Then try live-fire.

Good luck,

THIS ^   YEP.

Plus, stick an empty in there also.  In your original post, you stated that it was the empty that was hanging up on the extractor.

45'S, as mentioned, do have a lot of blow back with light loads. I had a friend with the same problem and I took the bolt out. The ejector would not move. After removing the retaining pin, I had to use pliers to pull the ejector and spring out. And it was not easy!

There was so much crud, I had to use a drill bit, turned by hand, to get the bulk of the gunk out of the ejector cavity.

A definite lack of maintenance.

shot it at club practice day today.

Worked fine.

Now the question is how long it will continue--mostly cause I'm curious

Like everydangthingelse that's man made. It'll run till it's breaks.

It would be wise for you to order a spare ejector with spring and extractor to have in your parts bag.

Also-IF you still use the 2 piece OEM firing pin. Have a spare for front piece.

Most common OEM, M/94 FP breakage is where the leg of the flat spring fits in the slot of the larger front part, it cracks/breaks at that slot. I have also seen the tip of the FP break off.

More good advice from OLG.

Heck, I think my Marlins are perfect, but I still keep (and often carry) extra Extractors and Ejectors.

have spares in my kit bag as I agree to having extras.

between one of my shooting buddies and myself we almost could build a Marlin except for receiver and barrel.  Got spares for all the screws and little things that have a tendency to jump out and fly across the room into another dimention
