What is considered a shooting glove?

Wondering if all gloves are not allowed when shooting or a particular type of gloves designed for shooting.

Howdy,

N. Illinois has some real cold days whenever it suits mother nature.

I tried wearing gloves and the nitpickers just cant wait to criticize the choice of gloves.

No materials made after 1900, no labels, no this, no that.

I bought gloves over the internet and sent them back.

Good luck finding Gloves that fit you and meet all the standards.

Uncle mikes are great shooting gloves. But not for SASS.

You could wear some nice wool gloves....real bulky wool, and take them off before you shoot.  then put them back on.  Get some of those cheap, disposable chemical handwamer thingies, use them to help keep your hands warm.  If you don't use them up, then seal it or them, in a 1qt freezer bag to "turn it off" and deactivate it as needed.  Reactivate them as needed, too.   Not as complicated, messy, or space intensive as it sounds.

Maybe think all this out, come up with a reasonable solution and give it to PWB :-) to propose as a rules fix???

Hard to believe deerskin gloves wouldn't be allowed or other such plain leather gloves. Gauntlets were surely worn but I am a noob to the sport. Trackers, scouts, Calvary etc. wore gloves, might not be as warm as we'd like. but something reasonable should be accommodated. I'll ask our local Northwet experienced players their view as I plan to make the Ghostriders my first meet.

Think Roy Rogers or Gene Autry...;)

I wear a pair of wool gloves, as Cat mentioned, or I wear a pair of leather gloves and I take them off to actually shoot. If the temps are in the 40's I will just wear the leather ones. Lower temps I will wear wool and slip some of those little "hot Hands"  hand warmer packets inside the palm area. I can't shoot with gloves on and feel I have positive control of my firearms.

Something else I do is wear a coat that covers my revolver grips so they aren't too cold to the touch when I shoot. On the long guns I just shoot so fast the cold doesn't bother me...kidding ;)

The only reference to gloves in the SHB other than the optional items for BW is:

The use or presence of any outlawed item is a Stage Disqualification. > Modern shooting gloves.

Which, if I'm not mistaken is refering to gloves like these:

"Modern shooting gloves" will usually have padding in the palm & thumb joint sections (as in those in the link).

"Velcro" closures are also OUTLAWED.

Plain wool, cotton jersey, and leather work gloves (e.g. deer/goatskin "roping" gloves), as well as "period" Cavalry gauntlets are allowed; including those with elastic in the wrist.

Legal gloves may also be "fingerless" for better trigger control.

I have some gloves that have what fills like bead ti stimulate the nerves that I shoot in when practicing since I'm loosing the sense of touch because of neurothopy would these be legal ot am I'm going to have to hit up a sporting goods store for golf gloves?

I found a pair of "Police Examination" gloves that I am going to try. Reason is a 12 shot shotgun stage at "Pursuit into the Osage Nation".  Last year I came out with blisters on my hand from the 12 ga barrels.  Very thin and very tight.

Just to verify, it was a weekday shoot and this person was pretty old and kinda sickly which is why we let him slide! Golf gloves, as far as I know, are NOT allowed!

In Indian war days the Cavalry, the dismounted Cavalry and the Infantry wore buffalo hide mittens

What would make golf gloves with no velcro illegal?

Well,

Is the discussion about wearing gloves to keep your hands warm or for grip enhancement when shooting?

Gentlemen,

I am really not trying to flame or stir the pot but I don't understand "presence of any outlawed item"?

I'm guessing if you have it on your person, like modern gloves tucked into a belt, that would get you a SD?

Am I close?

I would translate, "the presence of" to mean:

"......on the shooter's person or laid down on a prop or on the ground, ON THE FIRING LINE".

In other words, at a SASS competition you could haul around an M15 in your guncart, but you would incur a penalty if you brought it onto the firing line and laid it down on a table when you go up for your turn.

Because they look like golf gloves?

So what do golf gloves look like compared to any other thin leather glove.  Kinda like the arguments Tex used to get into describing the difference between Levies and Wrangler jeans.

Black Powder makes the barrel of my Henry too hot to hold on a hot summer day. I don't like to wear a glove on my trigger hand when shooting, but I have been wearing this simple deerskin work glove for years to protect my left hand from the heat. Nobody has ever said anything except the occasional Michael Jackson remark.

The tiny splinter fore arm of my old Stevens SXS does not offer much protection from burnt finger tips, so the glove comes in handy for it too.
