I guess the title says most of it.  I will soon be in the market for a '73 in 357 and would like some opinions.  I have only found one locally, new at my closest dealer, and as close as it is I am not a fan of the 'deluxe' pistol grips,  I guess it is just a cosmetic notion as I have never owned or even fired one.  My biggest question is who all offers the 20" rifles pre-tuned and ready to go.  I have had two guns by Cody C and one by Jimmy Spurs so far and really liked these.

There's a difference, slight maybe to some, in handling the "deluxe" configuration that throws me off, and I just won't own one.

I suggest you handle the straight stocked and pistol grip stocked (with curved lever) rifles alongside one another and feel the differences before you purchase one.  Also, I wouldn't buy a rifle, and send it to be worked over, but instead, buy from someone like Cody, as you say, and have him work it and send it to you.  Fewer surprises that way.

+1 sort of-_-

Everyone has a different perspective on what feels best. Does not mean right or wrong. For me the 20" border deluxe (pistol grip) feels so much better (I have several) than a straight stock that I sold all my straight stocked guns except two and as I find pistol grips in those calibers they are gone as well.

Definitely want to purchase ready to go from a reputable smith if possible. At a minimum you will save a couple FFL fees and extra shipping. Often they will be priced for little more than you can buy the gun and parts alone. And you are supporting those who support CAS/SASS. And if you did it on your own you would still have to install, tune and tweek everything yourself which while not rocket science is a pretty skilled operation to get things right.

All the best

What's SR?

"SR" could be Short Rifle or Sporting Rifle?  Both of which have straight grip stocks.  The rifles with pistol grip stocks have "Special" added to the model description.  My personal preference is the Half Octagonal Rifle because the barrel is not that common.  Took me two years to find one.

My remaining NMV 357 came in yesterday and I picked it up, real nice.  The Wolf springs are in the mail for these and I will see how they handle before considering more work on the Vaqueros.  I have the one set of 44-40s that I will be using the rifle from until I can sell the set to fund a new rifle in 357.  I will likely use the local dealer to receive a new rifle from one of the mentioned gunsmiths.   I picked up a box of 44-40 ammo with the new pistol and boy was that sticker shock, it seems you can add almost $10 a box if it says Cowboy anywhere on that box!  In fairness, I also picked up two boxes of 38 spec cowboy loads and they were almost as much as the 44-40s, leading me to wonder if lead cost more than jacketed to produce now days?

I will likely post for more insight into builder choice when it is time to make the rifle purchase.
