1897 Question

Recommended Posts

I have a very old and very rough original solid frame 1897. If the action bar slips out of the action hook as you close the bolt, which item needs to be replaced?  Hook, or bar?

Inquiring minds want to know,

Marlin

I'm unsure of which parts you're talking about.  Just quickly, three 3 parts jump to mind....haven't thought about it....more info please.:

-  Action Slide

-  Action Slide Hook

-  Action Slide Lock

Limited information in your topic post.  Say what is occurring, please.

For starters, when's the last time you stripped the shotgun, dug out crud and cleaned it well?  But, DO be aware that doing so could also raise issues.

It is pretty common for the fit of the action slide hook and the portion of the slide that fits into it to gradually wear.  Not sure if merely replacing the slide hook would do the trick.  You may also need to have the slide welded up and refit into an unworn slide hook.  Slides are relative hard to find, so building up by welding and then fitting may be an option.

Thanks for the input. I had talked to Coyote Cap and he told me the same thing. Bob's Gun Parts has a action slide listed but they want as much for it as I paid for the shotgun.

I have feelers out to a couple of gunsmiths, don't know if they can do it.  Are you aware of anybody I could mail the hook & slide to that might be able to do it?

Thanks for your time,

Marlin

Cat,

The action hook is attached to the 97 bolt with a screw that goes through the bolt.  The action slide is the steel rod that is part of the forearm on a 97.  When you slide the forearm back it fits into the action hook and moves the bolt back.  Sometimes one or both of these parts, hook & slide, get warn and the gun doesn't function properly.  In my case the action slide slips under the action hook as you try to close the bolt/action. The gun is in pieces and has been cleaned now. Putting it back together is when I found the problem. As far as an action slide lock, I think that is a split ring, for lack of a better term, that goes on the forearm wood.  I have been lead to understand this is a safety mechanism that keeps the bolt from immediately upon firing.  I have that part and will be reinstalling it in the gun.

Thanks for your time and input on my question,

Hi Marlin,

Thanks.  I do understand how it all works; I just wasn't sure in my mind what the issue is.  Marauder's fix is a good one, I think.  The Action Slides ARE tough to come by, used; impossible to find new, and they are expensive and subject to lug wear.  Tigging up your Action Slide's "grab lug" (for the Slide Hook) on the Slide arm is fairly easy for a good welder.  Properly cutting it back to spec requires attention on your (or someone's) part, and  isn't too difficult.  Get a good photo of a relatively unworn lug as a guide/model.

One thing seems to follow the other with these old '97's, I believe, because their operation is choreographic, so once the Slide/Slide Hook issue is resolved, another issue may manifest.  Don't worry, because you can figure it out.  Also, check over your Action Slide completely for cracks.
