Did a stupid

I opened up my computer yesterday to see what the Wire had to say.  A screen popped up with a request for information in a survey sponsored by SASS.  Always wanting to help I agreed to take the survey.  After giving my email(which they had anyway because it was e-mailed to me) it offered some prizes as SASS's thanks for taking the survey.  Bells started ringing. I killed it and got away from it but now every time I change location on the web I get a popup wanting gofundme, donate to, special offers, etc.

How do I get out of this. Running a MAC.

Go into your settings and delete your cookies.

Go to Safari, click history, erase "all history", then go to preferences, and find the tab that removes website data. Then restart.

You will have to sign back to some forums but you should be clean.

I went through my "History" and found "capture.com". Deleted it and am hoping that was the culprit.

My cleaning got rid of some of the trash but not all

Great.

Go to the History tab at the top of your screen, then select "show full history" at the very bottom. When that window opens, select "clear browsing data" shown on the left side. The next window says "Obliterate the following items from:" and a tab alongside gives you several choices.

Select "from the beginning of time."

Check at least the first four boxes/item of the eight from the list below.

Then hit the "clear browsing data" button

You should be good to go. You'll need to sign back in to the Wire etc. because your sign in has been erased.

I do this every day as regular maintenance.  Good luck!

Sounds like you've got adware. Cleaning out your browser history and cookies won't be enough to get rid of it. Download and run Malwarebytes for Mac (it's currently free). It'll tell you what it found and get rid of it, although you may still need to reset your default search engine and homepage.

The most common source for this kind of software is sites like Download.com, MacUpdates, etc. A Flash installer is a common vector. Your best bet is, whenever you need a piece of software, download it directly from the developer's website or through the App Store.

PM me if you're still having trouble.

Opened Chrome. Pulled down the "About Chrome". Found the "Clear Browsing Data". Did so for the last week.  So far, so good.  Malware told me there was nothing wrong then an ad popped up.

Popups can be caused by a few things, including a webpage you happen to be visiting. You can disable pop up windows in most web browsers, but if they're using something like Java it won't always work. uBlock web browser extension works pretty darn well for most sites, and they load a lot faster as well.
