What's latest on guns from the estate sale? Did you get a chance to look at any of them?

Or did I miss a post? :)

Slim:

What seemed at first to be an instant great deal has morphed into a major undertaking.

Dealer finally picked up the guns from the police after weeks of "discussions"; there are ownership issues on some of the guns (we have not been able to locate any of the decedent's paperwork on his purchases, and his house looks like a tornado went through it - twice); there are also some guns in the inventory (like a bunch of Colts) that you cannot sell in MA unless you can prove that they were registered in MA prior to 10/21/98, the enactment date of our "Approved Roster List".  The only handguns that can be sold in the State after that date are those appearing on "The List", specimens of which have been "tested" and found compliant with our "safety standards".  Colt does not submit guns for testing, and/or Colts lack certain required "safety features", so unless you can show that the gun was grandfathered by being registered prior to 10/21/98, it's unsaleable here.

This is complicated by the loss of several years worth of transfer records by the State in the mid-1980's, creating a black hole which cannot be re-constructed.

So the guns are at the dealer, locked up in large containers, until the dealer has the time and the resources to work his way through each and every one.  We are trying to work with the state to produce a historical file of all recorded (and preserved) gun transactions by this man, hoping to show that some of these non-List guns are grandfathered.

I still haven't seen the guns.  But the dealer tells me that someone "customized" several of them, a word he uttered with a wince and a cringe.

I've agreed to descend once again into the hoarder's home in an effort to locate magazines, factory boxes, and any available paperwork.  Time to buy a new Tyvek suit, booties and a better respirator.

Wow, that's quite a mess, figuratively and literally. Thanks for the update.

Just curious, if records for guns like the Colt can't be found, does the dealer sell them to out-of-state FFL dealers? I assume proceeds then go to the estate, minus the dealer's fees?

Yep.  And, of course, the pricing is wholesale, not retail - so the estate makes less money.
