My grandfather's division, the 97th Infantry, was intended to be the divisional reserve for the invasion of Japan.   The Battle of the Bulge caused the 97th to be sent to Europe where they spent time in both the 3rd Army and 1st Army.  After the war the 97th Infantry spent time in Japan performing occupation duties.
