Subdeacon Joe
I ask Zinke why he showed up to wash the wall. His response: "Rolling Thunder is here to wash the wall. I'm here to help them." 6:43 a.m.: Zinke uses a large scrub brush covered in suds to wash the very top of the memorial. Between scrubbing sessions, he makes small-talk with veterans and park service officers. Quote So it was on the morning of Sunday, April 9, when Virginia and Maryland chapters of Rolling Thunder rode into the memorial before sunrise. Clad in leather motorcycle gear with a colorful array of patriotic patches sewn in, a dozen members of the iconic biker club, most of them veterans, readied for an hour of washing and scrubbing the black wall. Today, however, they had some extra help. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke would be scrubbing alongside them. Good for him! By the way - I found this on Facebook. Sedalia Dave
Quote Zinke has taken an immersive approach to his new job, which happens to include oversight of America's national parks and monuments. The Secretary rode a horseinto the office on his first day, shoveled snow off the Lincoln Memorial steps after a snowstorm, gave stunned tourists a personal tour of the cavernous cathedral beneath the Lincoln Memorial, and has engaged in international sock diplomacy. Today, the Trump appointee and Navy SEAL continued his hands-on approach to the office by hand-scrubbing the smudges and bird droppings off the Vietnam War Memorial. Loophole LaRue, SASS #51438
Says a lot about what is in this man's heart.... Wouldn't it be wonderful, one day a year, to see each Secretary (and maybe a few other admins) in the field, doing the work of his/her agency at the lowest level? Think of the VA director in a ward emptying bed pans and changing sheets; the Sec of Defense in a combat area, working the mess hall; the Sec of Education at Parents Night, talking about real kids and real school issues with the folks impacted by his/her decisions; the Sec. of Labor working on an assembly line. The possibilities are endless. LL
Charlie Harley, #14153
You're thinking too hard, LaRue. Something like that would make too much sense. HUD secretary cleaning graffiti in a housing unit. Sec of Agriculture mucking stalls on a dairy farm. Great idea. Glad to see at least one of the secretaries taking the lead. Pat Riot
I don't know much about Mr. Zinke but I do know I would like to meet him and shake his hand. Loophole Larue has a point and I agree wholeheartedly. I doubt it would ever happen but wouldn't it be nice? The people that I have known that worked in executive positions that actually came "into the trenches" to see what people did may not have endeared themselves to everyone they managed but they did become more respected and it gave them a sense of appreciation for what people did that worked for them. Exactly. I have clients involved in very technical mechanical businesses, some with senior management teams that have absolutely no mechanical or technical background - i.e., bean counters. In my view, you cannot effectively manage a business without a thorough understanding of how the work actually gets done. Government is no different. Charlie Harley, #14153
I spent ten years in the fossil power industry working in huge coal-fired generating stations. The two best bosses spent time in the skilled trades before getting their engineering degrees. They understood EVERY aspect of their plants and were just as comfortable in the control room as escorting CEOs.

Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
The last time I saw this monument, there was a flagpole nearby with medallions for the services. The Marine Corps medallion gets polished every day by a detail from the 8th and I. Is it still the only one that gets polished?
