Utah Bob #35998
Runways are generally repaired very quickly and not considered a valuable tactical target. We found that out in Vietnam. A few bulldozers and you're back in business in a couple of hours. Runways are a target if you are engaged with the enemy and you need to deny him the use of the runways while your troops are advancing.

Appears to be at odds with almost all other posts in this thread. By listening to a few so called news stations one immediately sees, reads, hears the difference of the same action always one so very different than all the rest, such as yours. KINDA makes you wonder. Have a good day. Slic: Sorry, Pal...ya lost me. My first post was done the morning after the attack; admittedly, the information was fresh and undeveloped; the language I was referring to came from Russian reports (please note that I expressed skepticism regarding the veracity of these statements). These statements were widely reported that morning, including on Fox, the WSJ and The Boston Globe; again, they cited Russian sources. I was NOT suggesting that the Russian reports were accurate; I was asking for input from folks with military experience, who might be able to shed some light on the rationale for the operation, and whether or not the Russian reports were likely to be fabrications or exaggerations. I got precisely that from UB and others. I don't have any idea what "info" in my posts you believe to "be at odds" with almost all of the other posts. Dirty Dan Dawkins
I liked the message sent by the missile attack, but I think having the balls to fly over with some B-52's, and an escort of fighters, and bombing the B-Jesus out of those targets (including the runway) would have said so much more. B52s put flight crews at risk. Cruise missiles have no crews.

Cruise missiles are much more accurate than a dumb bomb falling from 35,000 feet. Apparently this was a precision attack and collateral damage was nil. And, as the Marshal said, B52s have crews. Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
There was a report, maybe it was truthful, maybe not. January 1991, a commercial flight going into Chicago or St Louis. Pilot announced. look out your left window folks, I believe the war has begun. A flight of B2s was seen heading east.

Trump did not want to target Russian military personnel. Almost all the Syrian anti-aircraft defences have at least some Russian military personnel on their crews. Neutralizing those sites so that the raid could be carried out with aircraft would have caused us to knowingly fire on Russian military personnel.
