The Original Lumpy Gritz
Contact one of the China 97 smiths here. What's the prefix on the serial number? OLG
Frontier Lone Rider
Or, as I.A.C./Norinco has said, the serial number on their 97 just lets one know when the receiver was stamped, not necessarily when the shotgun was manufactured or assembled. Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
The first two digits of an IAC serial number, as stated above, shows year when the receiver was made. That's usually close to the final assembly year. Unless the gun is a recent one in which the series is CBxxxx, in which case most were made in 2014/2015. Precise dating is hard with the Chinese guns. And, Norinco numbers - I've not seen them explained. Most IACs made with an 06 or higher serial number are going to be very good guns to work with - tolerances held well and good steel. Before that, most are not worth even showing to a gunsmith. Coyote Cap can usually tell you all the details if you can reach him. Good luck, GJ
