The Polish Pistolero
Here is what I ended up with! Deuce Stevens recommendation of Sunshine Orange, and then I added Golden Yellow Rit fabric dye, since the orange seemed a bit too dark, 2 cups hot water and a cup of distilled vinegar, heat to simmer not allowing to boil stirring constantly for 15 minutes. Rinse and dry. The second Schofield is at the leather guy making holsters, so just having the other set of grips ready when it comes back! What do y'all think? The grips are from N.C. blazeafar SASS # 6750
Isn't Ivory suppose to look like Ivory, or were you going for some other look? I used black tea to darken these up some.

The Polish Pistolero
Ya, I was hoping for quite a bit lighter! The stock grips were just too bright. I tried tea on some other white plastic (not the same material) and it didn't touch it! So, I opted for the dye, just left it in too long! They look better then the bright white on the deep blue. If they were nickel, I would have left them alone. Stock picture from gungrip.com . I didn't take a before and after picture, but the ones I used were brighter white! J-BAR #18287
You might try a dab of bleach on the inside of the grip as a test, just to see if they can be lightened a bit. Or maybe some peroxide in a little hidden spot... I love experimenting with stuff like this, and I applaud your courage!!

I would use heat, but with bleach and heat might not be a great idea standing over a pot (chlorine gas). I'm going to try some Rit dye remover today, and just start over if it takes. I do kinda like the darkness, it's growing on me! I got reamed out on CasCity, for not being authentic to the period with the guns being unblemished like a new gun with thousand year old looking grips! Maybe its me, but another reason I'm not a reenactor or a NCOWS shooter!
blazeafar SASS # 6750
The dark looks good but to much like real smooth dense hard wood, such as blood wood or iron wood.
Deuce Stevens SASS#55996
Well I think they look great. If you like them then thats ALL that matters. Your guns your grips. Also side note, my very favorite kind of ivory is Mastodon and I have seen plenty of grip made of that over the years. The pic is a example of some very dark mastodon ivory. Sound like someone else should do a little research before reaming anyone.
J-BAR #18287
I agree. I have experimented with antiquing several guns, with varying results. Your opinion is the only one that matters. If you like them, fine. If not, continue experimenting.
Yul Lose
IMHO, those grips look pretty dang good and about 1,000% better than they originally did. There is only one opinion that matters though and that's yours. I think you did an excellent job.
Tombstone Tex
I like that you're giving it a whirl anyway, and as far as those NCOWS guys go, just say "If the gun has been taken care of, no reason it should look like a disaster with aged ivory" haha. Thats just my view from the fire. BTW, nice schofields...I definitely see some in my future.
Abilene Slim SASS 81783
You might find that the Rit dye remover doesn't remove all of it, which might give you the look you were after in the first place. Could be really cool. Keep us posted.
blazeafar SASS # 6750
When I stained mine using tea it did not give me what I was looking for. The second try I used wet tea bags and placed them on the grips and keep them moist for a several hours until I got the look I was after. DIY away! Rex M Rugers #6621
My personal take on "authentic to the period" is that it is way over-rated. Anyway , they are your guns and grips , so what counts is whatever trips YOUR trigger.(pun intended) Good luck , Rex
The Polish Pistolero
Thanks y'all! I appreciate the SASS family more and more every day! I didn't get a chance today to do anything on them, and I do like how they turned out. I think instead I will get another couple pairs and work with them for a switch out pair for a different outfit, like I do suspenders, hats, shirts, pants, and boots! Heck, as anybody that knows me, I try to wear a different outfit at every shoot in some different combination! I have 5 sets of different pistols, 5 different shotguns, and 6 different rifles! So, accessorize at everything! Guns, and what they wear!
