Father Kit Cool Gun Garth Posted February 20, 2017 Share Posted February 20, 2017 As a new shooter preparing for his first match, I've been re-reading the Shooters Handbook Version 21.8 (February 1, 2016) to re-familiarize myself for any possible faux-pas (got to love those French) I might make, and at the same time, ensure that I am conforming with the proper equipment, ammunition, etc. I am confused with the statement on page 11 under HOLSTERS, CARTRIDGE BELTS, AND BANDOLIERS, 4th bullet point, where it states "Rifle and revolver ammunition may not be carried in a shotshell loop." Does this imply that an extra rifle or revolver cartridge: (1) cannot be placed in an empty shotshell loop on your shotshell ammo belt, or; (2) cannot have it's own loop on your shotshell ammo belt. If the answer is (2), and your shotshell ammo belt has rifle/revolver cartridge loops on it, will you be in violation of the rule if you do not place a cartridge in it. Cool Gun, Here's your answers: (1) is correct in that you cannot legally place cartridges in a shotshell loop. (2) you can have separate loops for rifle or revolver on your shotshell belt. Most shotshell belts are setup this way with the loops either sewn on or with a slide-on cartridge holder. Many things in this game can be confusing. Number two is acceptable and many shotgun belts and bandoleers have extra loops for rifle and pistol ammo. They cannot be sewn to the front of the shotgun loops, however. Hoss Posted February 21, 2017 Share Posted February 21, 2017 Garth, Don't overthink the rulebooks. and don't worry about a faux-pas at your first match(es) Go to a match or 2, look there, ask questions, try out gear. Once you've shot a match or 2 the rules become much clearer and easier to follow/understand. most club assign a mentor to a new shooter. Typically when I mentor somebody I take them from their loading cart to the line, supervise them loading and answer questions about the stage, then escort them to the TO. I then stay close, but let the TO take them thru the stage. After last gun I then escort them to the unloading table, supervise them unloading, and then walk them back to their cart. Mr. Brunelle: I'm assuming that the rewrite of the entire SHB for the February 1, 2016 version 21.8 which included approximately 220 additional words to clarify the rules, then was based on MORE THAN ONE person's apparent misunderstanding of the current rules "as written". Mr. Hellbender: Thank you for the reference to that discussion, as it makes my point. When the written rule has to be bantered back and forth with 55 responses, then one must assume that the rule needs to be clarified. PaleWolf Brunelle in response #32 on the above thread stated: "The ROC also discussed that and other related practices. Blackwater 53393 Posted February 23, 2017 Share Posted February 23, 2017 The best decision I made when considering joining S.A.S.S. was to give the SHB a good read and then go to a match!! I had guns enough and leather enough and even ammo enough!! I asked a few questions as I went through that first match, got SEVERAL suggestions from more experienced shooters, and acquired a couple of infinitely valuable friends on that first day!! Going on 14 years of shooting now and those friends are still there and I've never stopped learning or passing along the knowledge I've obtained!!
