Dead Eye Raith Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 Anyone use the Heritage Arms big bores? My local pawn shop has one for $375 and just wondering if I could make it work. Saw a couple of reviews on YouTube, and they were favorable. Just some questions.
Abilene Slim SASS 81783 Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 I had a .45 cal once and liked it. Made by Pietta. Sold it to make room for other purchases. $375 seems high for a used one, given they could be bought new for that just a few years ago. "...if I make I could make it work" implies it needs 'smithing? If so, $375 is definitely too high IMO.
Dead Eye Raith Posted January 27, 2017 Author Posted January 27, 2017 That's just his asking price. I've bought from him before and I could probably get it for $340. Thanks for the reply Slim.
Diamond S Doug Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 Yes I started out with the .357 Heritage. They worked well but only lasted about 2 years shooting at least twice a month. The cylinder bolt had a knife edge that rides on a pin screwed into the grip frame. When the edge wears the bolt gets out of time. Good accuracy, excellent when tuned by a good smith, but short on longevity.
Straight Stock Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 I too am just starting out as a new shooter this year and bought 2 of the big bore 357s last November from kygunco.com for about $375 each brand new. I've practiced with them a little and seem to function fine and seems accurate enough for sass. What diamond doug said concerns me a little, as I plan to shoot in 2 matches a month. I'll have to keep an eye on the cylinder bolt for sure. Dead eye, also look on gunbroker for cimarrons, piettas, Ubertis, etc. heritage is hard to get parts from, so maybe look at who sells parts for which guns, and then maybe try for those guns instead so you know parts are available. Taylor's has parts for uberti and pietta for example. Good luck in your search for irons!
Dead Eye Raith Posted February 4, 2017 Author Posted February 4, 2017 I just traded John Barleycorn for a pair of slicked up SASS Vaqueros. It was what I wanted but couldn't afford. I scored big and got what I wanted and didn't have to settle. Just looking for some leather now...
