Have you met any celebrities?

Recommended Posts

When we lived in Cali, we used to volunteer at an annual Halloween charity event at the Universal Studios back lot. We would decorate our section of the back lot and hand out candy donated by manufacturers to trick or treaters. They also had local restaurants giving away their food in case the guests got hungry. Those trick or treaters would pay to come in and participate, with all the proceeds going to Ronald McDonald charities. It would attract thousands of celebrities and elites from all around the area. I got to meet people like Will and Jada Smith and their family, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, Alice Cooper, Jerry Seinfeld and many others. I was usually too busy to strike up a conversation with any of them though.

More than I thought after I started writing them down. At the top of my list are Red Skelton, Dolly Parton and Gary Powers

Lots. However,, Red Skelton would be at the top of my list. Also for true hero type celbs I would go with one of my home down folks. Mr. Gary Powers. Anybody know who Gary is? Recent movie made about him, the U2 pilot that was shot down overseas

I wasn't going to write this and then I thought "what the heck".

Anyway, back in late 2000 I was invited to go on stage and meet and shake hands with Bill Clinton at the Staples Center when I worked for the transit agency there in Los Angeles. I was one of four "invitees". I declined.

Once represented the LA Lakers, including Mitch Kupchak and Kurt Rambis, when they were both still playing. Two of the most down-to-earth, regular guys you could ever meet. Regular except for size. Kupchak was so tall that he had to have his Volvo dealer remove the sunroof and install a dome to get enough headroom; the dealer also installed a 10" steering wheel to give Mitch room to put his knees up alongside the wheel.

Rambis was John Denver on stilts. A laid back surfer, every doorway in his house was raised to 9', and his bed was extended to the same size. His wife coached the LA professional tennis franchise at the time; while watching a match, I also met Billie Jean King.

Have met a whole bunch of Republican politicians. Mitt Romney is undoubtedly the smartest guy in the room. Any room.

He was the only President of his party that I admired and I thought he did a good job considering how he was not "in the loop" when his predecessor died.

Meet him a few times.

Jack Soo from "Barney Miller" rode in my cab once. Only solo passenger who ever sat in the front seat. He didn't say much but he whistled the whole ride.

Also Alex Trebek when I was on "Jeopardy" (Yes, "I Lost on Jeopardy").

Shook hands with Mandy Patinkin, Judy Collins and Christopher Titus at meet and greets following concerts.

Met the old ballplayer Juan Pizarro at the team's hotel where my Mom was working. Mom had a funny story about encountering Michael Jackson at the Kahala Mall in Hawaii back in the 1980s. Mom: "Aren't you Michael Jackson?" MJ: "Why yes, how did you know?" Mom: "Well, somebody would have had to been off living in a cave somewhere the last 20 years not to recognize you". (She had a way with words) MJ: "He, he" Bout then he was spotted by others and mobbed by autograph seekers so she just slipped away.

Never met anyone of no count, but I do have a story to share.

One time I got pulled over in a school zone for speeding. It was raining heavily. As the officer leaned in my window to go over the ticket, I farted. I couldn't hold it in. It was like my stomach was about to explode. I had eggs that morning, lots of them, and it smelt real bad. I mean REAL bad. He decided it was better to be wet. You shoulda seen the look on his face. True story. I still laugh when I think about that expression he made.

I spent about 45 minutes in a holding room with Clinton. He was not rude at all but very lets say presidential and stayed with his staff. Like him or not you could feel the power in that room. Obama was just plan rude

I live in Montana... not many see-leb-erty's 'round these parts. Hank Jr. and Randy Weaver can be seen at gun shows occasionally. Becky Munden still shows up at Cowboy shoots now and again, but not to shoot, just to get out, I think. Sat next to Eddie Albert on a flight from Vegas to San Francisco about... 1975 or so. Coach. Must have had a bad weekend at the craps table. Met Bill Jordan in the restaurant of the Rainbow hotel in Great Falls in June of 1988. The Keiths were friends of my grandparents, and I met Elmer several times in my youth. Charlie Pride was a good friend of my parents way back before he hit it big as a singer, and I've met him a few times.

My great uncle was a well known silent movies star. His second wife was an actress. What a GREAT deal.

She had a mansion in Beverly Hills with a pool and servants. What an awesome deal for a starving young

Marine. My cousin was a swabbie and also availed himself of her place.

She was always having parties and we met a lot of those jerks!!!

I ran track in HS with an "evil" actor, tried to make time with a famous lady in my family basement

(without success) had a bit part riding in some Westerns and met two famous brothers in those movies.

Their personalities ranged from great to slime just like the rest of us.

I got Charlie Pride to autograph a baseball for me.

An autographed baseball from a country music legend, you ask? Yes, very few people know that before making it big in music, Charlie Pride played professional baseball in the Negro Leagues.

He worked at a lead smelter here in East Helena, and played on the plant's baseball team - The Smelterites.

The NFL running back? I was a freshman his senior year of high school at Columbus South High. Nice guy, with AMAZING leaping ability. He was better known for basketball and track in high school. Of course, we didn't have much of a football team. I was good friends with his cousin throughout high school.

That would have been a perfect time to use Doc Holliday's line in Tombstone, "Pardon me if I don't shake your hand"

Yes it would have, but at that time I was pretty sure that if I met that man I would have decked him. Had that offer been made a few years earlier, I know I would have without any thought on what the consequences would bring. When the offer was made about a dozen scenarios went through my mind. Eleven of which involved me being swarmed by the Secret Service and my life and career ending as I knew it. I chose number 12 and politely declined.
