When my son was playing Little League baseball his coach told all the parents to be sure to come to practice on a particular Saturday and he suggested that we might want to bring a camera. He had some sort of connection with the Detroit Tigers organization and had made arrangements for Alan Trammell to attend the practice. He was still playing shortstop at that time. Heck of a nice guy and it was really amusing to see him hitting grounders to the kids. My son was maybe 10 years old at the time.

Going through Basic Training at Ft. Knox, KY in 1980-81, 100 of us from my basic training company, Fox-15-4, were selected to be extras in a movie being filmed on post at the time.

The film turned out to be "Stripes".

Got to spend a day 'on set' and meet, talk with Bill Murray and John Candy. Both were very funny, gracious and took time to talk with as many of us as they could. Bill Murray was funny, John Candy was hilarious.

Spent the day marching around Triple Nickle, running through man-made 'rain', re-shooting scenes, etc. Was a nice break from the routine of basic.

Sadly, none of the scenes I was in !0 made it into the movie, or; 2) the shot is so far away you can't make out my face. I was guidon bearer so I know where I am.

Before the wife and I met, she, her sister and their mom were extras in "Split Image" with Peter Fonda when scenes were shot in Dallas. There are some shots where you can actually see them! My wife said it was so cool having Peter Fonda holding my mother-in-law's shoulders and directing her where to walk, how to stand, what to say.

That reminds me!! My son pitched in little league and on up into high school! We took him to a two day camp at Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN. The man running the show was Gaylord Perry!! Hatfield was in middle school at the time and was the youngest player out there. Mr. Perry took special interest in him, either because he WAS the youngest, or because he threw a great knuckle ball!! Great guy!!

It was 1967 and our flight was shut down at Vi Thanh (in the least pacified province in the country) after inserting a battalion of Vietnamese infantry into the paddies. Col. Harper walks up to us with Red Barber, Joe DiMaggio and Pete Rose. My first thought was "What are you doing here? Don't you know that you could get shot?" but I kept my mouth shut. They wanted to see some guys out in the field, so Col. Harper brought them to see us. They were very congenial and had a word with each of us, then other crews came up and they were surrounded by a crowd of adoring fans. That evening, Red Barber gave a great show at the club, and all three signed autographs for everybody who wanted one.

They must have had writer's cramp the next day and we appreciated the effort that they made for us.

Let's see, when I was about 4 or 5 my buddy's mom took us to some market grand opening where I met Bozo the clown. A few years later we were vacationing at my uncles' home on Lake Arrowhead, CA. Went to the little Cedar Glen market and ran into Christopher George (Rat Patrol) and his wife Linda Day George. What I remember most as a 12 year old was he was short and she was beautiful.

In 1978 my wife and I were at Ascot Raceway in Gardena, CA. I had the fortune to meet Lotus F1 teammates Mario Andretti and Ronnie Petersen. Ronnie died at Monza that same year.

While working at John Wayne Airport I saw several celebrities and talked to a few, including Colin Powell, Tommy Lasorda, John Force, Barry Maguire (car care products), Glen Close, Chip Foose and a woman who denied it, but I could swear was Martina McBride (hard to hide those eyes). Also met and had a picture taken with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Also provided escort for George H.W. Bush (tall man and I felt very proud when he put his hand on my shoulder while waiting for his luggage to come off ramp side), Barbara Bush and GW Bush on two separate occasions. Also shook hands with Bill Clinton (I know, but he was a president).

Met Don Mclean at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano in his later years, seemed very bitter. A two separate ocean cruises I met Lorna Luft and Marty Allen.

Met Hugh O'Brien at an EOT in Norco. He is, after all Wyatt Earp. Also met Peter Sheryako there.

Well, that's all that I can remember.

ETA: met Michael Wayne when delivering his "Duke" leather jacket from our Aero Bureau. Our helicopters were Duke I and Duke II.

Robin Williams at the Black Point Ren Faire.

Rod Serling, Tenzig Norgay, Richard Leaky, Thor Heyerdahl - all as guest lecturers in a series by Palomar and Mira Costa junior colleges in the '60s and '70s.

Alexi II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus - at Ft, Ross, CA. Well...got his blessing along with a piece of cake. A week later we saw him on TV trying to negotiate a peace between the factions as the Soviet Union fell apart.

A few years back when we lived in Monument, CO, casting was going on locally for The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp as Tonto. One of our daughters and her boyfriend at the time were walking through the malls in Colorado Springs and recognized Johnny Depp, walked up to him, started talking and our daughter got a photo with him.

While I'm no fan of his politics, I do think Johnny Depp is a talented actor and I do give him kudos for being one of the few that made a statement about moving out of America and actually did.

Our other daughter (they are twins) worked at the ice cream shop in Palmer Lake and who should walk in one day? Tommy Chong. Yes, that Tommy Chong.

I also met a famous writer, "famous" to me, that frequents this here forum. I even have a signed copy of one of his books. He's a fairly modest, unopinionated fellow. He wears a black hat with a feather in it on his posts here. :D

Jerry Lewis - a nice guy.

Evil Knievel - I got to Vegas early one morning and so did he. Had a drink with him at a small bar in a casino. Autographed a napkin for my son, "Your Dad's pal". On another napkin was a pass into a night club he had an interest in. Sharks?

Arnold Palmer - did on-course security at Senior PGA several times for him. On pro-am days, would walk down the fairway with him after his shots. Pretty down to earth guy.

Walter Mondale, Vice President and President Bush, both while assisting on Secret Service details.

My wife and I met Evil Roy and Wicked Felina today! Very gracious folks.

Then we met Charlie Daniels at an autograph session at the Daniel Defense booth (SHOT Show). After the wife and I had our picture taken, Mr. Daniels asked for a picture with just me as he said I reminded him of his late guitar player Tommy Crain.

Over many years in the Navy and a few SHOT Shows I've been fortunate to have met several celebrities Jimmy Buffett, Mac McAnally, Jamie Farr, Trace Adkins, R. Lee Ermey (The Gunny), Craig Morgan, Big & Rich, Lou Ferrigno, Mark Wills, Darryl Worley, Luke Branquinho, and several others. The ones that stick out the most are the band Lonestar. After learning that I bought a pair of tickets to see them for my daughter's 8th birthday they invited us on their bus after the concert.

Pete Townshend - At a book signing/performance for his partner

John Entwistle - Meet and great after a solo performance

Roger Daltrey - While waiting for a train at the Amtrak station

Three famous Texans come to mind. All met through my serving on a committee planning and hosting a county-wide agricultural civic event and selecting key note speakers.

1. George W. Bush - While he was Governor of Texas and just beginning his campaign for U.S. President.

2. Rick Perry - Then Texas Commissioner of Agriculture and later the longest serving Governor of Texas and candidate for U.S. President. Now, the President-elect's pick for Secretary of Energy.

3. And, . . . uh . . . Oops. (A little joke for those who remember that debate moment.)

Was within hand shaking distance with President Reagan (Ottawa Visit 1981), Lash Larue, Duncan Reinaldo (Cisco), Leo Carrillio (Pancho), Johnny Mack Brown. That's the only U.S. personalities that I was within touching distance.

Marion Zimmer Bradly
her Daughter, Moira Greyland (fair hand with an epee)

Poul Anderson

George Lucas (tried to keep him out of an authors/directors/big wigs party at a sifi convention because he didn't have the proper badge. He took it in good humor that I didn't recognize him. We discussed it a bit, finally I said, OK, judging from you obviously expensive leather jacket with the Lucasfilms logo embroidered on it, you must be a "somebody" go on in."

Ben Johnson, He was at a western wear place here in Des Moines. I got him to sign my Louis Lamour book Sackett. He played the character Cap Roundtree in the movie.

Louis Lamour, he came to the Des Moines Library when I was a kid. My mom worked there so I got to meet him.

Kyle Busch. Met him a couple of times at the Iowa Speedway. Was very nice to my kids.

Bobby Allison, went to a race in Richmond, Va. I was stationed on a ship in Norfolk. A shipmate and I decided to go over. We took ships binoculars (kind of big maybe a foot and a half long) to the race. The day before the Nascar race they had a Busch Grand National race. We were setting behind these guys and ya could tell they really knew racing. There was a bad crash and they were saying they hoped the one driver was ok. I whipped out the binoculars to check it out and they started laughing then asked if they could take a look. Turned out it was Bobby Allison and Bobby Hamilton. They kept cracking up about the binoculars and bought us beers during the race.

Harry Gant, went to the same race the next year and had a friend of mine from home in Iowa come out to go with me. The year before had bought the tickets the day before however this year it was sold out. We decided to get there early to see if we could buy any tickets. This guy pulls up in this old pickup and we asked him if he had any extra tickets. He hollers out to this other guy to help us out. He got us some tickets at face value. When they were doing driver intros we realized the guy in the truck was Harry Gant.

Bob Feller, Hall of fame pitcher for the Cleveland Indians, from Van Meter Iowa. Came to visit at the Des Moines VA hospital where I work. My uncle Will came to see him when I told him he would be there. They served on the same ship in WWII. Got a baseball signed and gave it to my dad. Dad grew up a fan of the Heater from Van Meter.
