Four Bucks #36386 Life
Where the gun was obtained or how it got there has nothing to do with flying regulations although I am sure the liberal politicians and their hand-wringing followers will blame the lack of "control". The Baggage Check area is no different from...the mall, your church, a movie theater, any restaurant...it is a public, un-secured area. You know, there is freedom there. The way to stop a lot of this nonsense is to allow free Americans to kill them back. Tom Payne 13115
LE should be at the check in counter and the luggage pick up areas. At the airport I fly from when flying with guns LE is upstairs with the TSA crew. They are of little use there. They should have their staging area down stairs at check in looking for travelers with firearm luggage. TSA does not need LE to watch you take off your boots!! But this won't happen they will just make flying with guns a head ache because of one moron.
Appaloosa Amy, #63949, CT
The kids were to fly back to college on Saturday afternoon...Snazzy with her two shotguns and Al B with his shotgun. We went to Bradley (Hartford, CT) in a snowstorm where we checked their bags and two gun cases in at the Southwest counter. No issues or questions. Went thru security and 30 minutes later get the call that their flight is delayed which means they will miss their connection. They get their flight changed to Sunday am and the lady at the Southwest counter radios the description of their bags and gun cases to baggage and they are waiting for them in baggage 5 minutes later. Sunday we repeat the process in Hartford. No issues. They fly to BWI (Baltimore) but they have an 8 hour lay over and must claim their bags and gun cases then re-check them in at the counter and go thru security. SW rep tells them that they can't check bags sooner than 4 hours before their flight so they will put their bags and guns on an earlier flight to St. Louis via Atlanta. Snazzy grilled the agent who swore they would be in St. Louis at the security office waiting for them. They were there. So far Southwest has yet to let us down. Southwest has never batted an eye whether we are checking in one over/under in a pelican or 8 cowboy guns in our Americase. As a side note, we never fly with ammo. If we are shooting cowboy we ship it and if the kids are traveling to a clay target match with their college team, the coaches buy it at the match. Jimmy Reb, SASS #54804
Quote Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console. (Added Pub. L. 99–360, § 1(a), July 8, 1986, 100 Stat. 766.) This law is good for those who travel. Now if you could just git the state of New York to acknowledge it. They will arrest you for possession of a firearm even when it is being transported legally.
Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474
We seem to be in danger of losing sight of the main issue here: That a man with known mental problems and known to the authorities was not being watched or cared for, while he had access to firearms. We are fortunate he did not get access to explosives. What can/should we be doing about those with mental issues having access to firearms or explosives, while preserving our privacy and rights? Coho
The amount of ammo you can carry depends on the airline. I have travel many time on Alaska Airlines and carried 1K+ rounds and have had no issues. (Yes I cleared it with AK air) Coho Edited January 10, 2017 by Coho
