Wolfgang, SASS #53480
Very interesting. Thanks for posting. Many years ago I worked in a shipyard in San Diego. Sometimes my crane crew would unloaded rough forged shafts from flat cars and haul them to the machine shop. Some where just rough forgings, and others had one machining to take the roughness off of them. One of the BIG SHIPS ( ie. for Exon for the Valdez oil ) came back for "warrantee work" . . . the shaft vibrated caused leaking and the engine room pumps had to run continuously. Rumor was that the company that forged the shaft had dropped it. It was quite a job to cut open the side of the engine room ( with the bow ballasted down to lift the stern high. ) Chain fall the shaft out thru the side and on to a barge, . . .then chain fall the replacement shaft back on and install it. Forty Rod SASS 3935
I remember in the past that forging was considered to be superior to casting. Is that still true and if so, why?
