Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 (edited) Found a new fly pattern tied with marabou and tinsel, called THE OZARK MARABOU STREAMER. Itis red, yellow and black. Tied on a #4 hook. Wondering if they use it for bass or trout. I like the pattern but would use chartreuse and black I think, and fish it for bass. Have you ever heard of it? Edited December 10, 2016 by Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Quote
Tyrel Cody Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 I'd likely substitute chartreuse for yellow, but leave some red in there; make them bass think it's injured and bleeding. Quote
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted December 10, 2016 Author Posted December 10, 2016 Those darn bass are mean suckers. All my fly rods are designed for trout, and I have concerns about fishing for bass with them. All but my 8 wt. It is 9'6" generation II graphite, and I use it for steelhead. For Bass, I would think a fiberglass rod would be a better bet. Am I wrong, again? Quote
Tyrel Cody Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 Yes , I've caught 6lb Smallmouth bass with a graphite fly rod; ain't many fish that'll fight harder than a smally Quote
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted December 10, 2016 Author Posted December 10, 2016 (edited) Maybe my 5 wt will work on those small Big Mouths over at Lost Lake. Edited December 10, 2016 by Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Quote
Chickasaw Bill SASS #70001 Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 Heck , I have been tying stuff very close to that for over 25 years , have used dubbed bodys , chenniel , peacock herl , and about every color you can think of bead heads , hour glass eyes , lead wrapped around the hook shank when I was teaching folks how to tie , that was the second style I would show em , first being a wolly bugger have cuaght white bass , black bass , crappie , and trout on em , along with big red ears perch CB Quote
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted December 10, 2016 Author Posted December 10, 2016 I had never heard of the pattern. Living in the Pacific Northwet, I guess a fly named after the Ozarks is not well known here. Seems when you get into marabou and flash just about anything goes. Steelhead colors seem to run to red, pink and black. I suspect that the fish take the red and pink for eggs. I have no idea what the black could represent. Just something to eat I suppose. Quote
J-BAR #18287 Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 (edited) It has been quite a while since I tied flies or went fishing. This is the first time I've seen a Norvise. My first thought was, "That's cheating!!" No way I could justify a $300 vise, but it's fun to watch. Edited December 10, 2016 by J-BAR #18287 Quote
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted December 10, 2016 Author Posted December 10, 2016 J Bar, most of the better vices run close to the $300.00. I have toyed with the idea of buying one. My forty year old Price Vice has just about seen it's lifetime use. Jaws are worn and do not grip well. The old Thompson B vise I gave my Grandson was like a tank. I don't think he uses it tho. I think I paid $30.00 for it when St. Peter was a fisherman. I did buy his bobbins. They work ok, but are sort of a novelty. My old bobbins do just as well. Quote
Chickasaw Bill SASS #70001 Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 Most of the time , I use an OLD Thompson , I got used back in the "80s , the gentleman I got it from had quit tying in the late 50s I did replace the jaws , when I got it , great vice , CB Quote
