Widder, SASS #59054 Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Has anyone ever bedded the barrel of a 10/22 and free floated the receiver? The reason I ask: It seems to me that the heavy barrels that are attached to some 10/22 receivers would have a tendency to eventually cause the front of the receiver to 'OVAL' and get slightly out of round. Thereby, causing the barrel to eventually sit kinda 'cockeyed' and accuracy would suffer greatly. Anyhow, although I might be overthinking this situation, I am still curious if anyone has ever bedded the barrel (or a portion of it) and free floated the receiver. Or may bedded the portion of the barrel just a tad forward of the chamber and thereby relieving stress on the front section of the receiver. ..........Widder
Chili Ron Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Howdy, yes. BEst CR OR one could get a barrel of aluminum with a steel insert aka Beyer Barrels. and the Beyer are available in bull or standard taper. Not really for use with regular iron sights, and available in many colors IF you want to pay a little extra. Im thinkin cubbie blue?
Al OVERA, SASS#26238 Life Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 I shim the V block to fully support the barrel at the receiver, (or one could purchase one of the commercially available "adjustable" ones) and put a 1/2" wide strip of bicycle inner tube under the barrel at the very forward end of the stock. This has given me excellent accuracy and repeatability for a long time now, with no wear on the receiver. haven't felt the need to mess with bedding materials. Al
Widder, SASS #59054 Posted November 16, 2016 Author Posted November 16, 2016 AO, I had thought about the rubber (inner tube) piece out towards the end of the forearm. I had not thought about shimming the V block. Thanks for the info. CHILI: I've used one of those light weight 'carbon fiber' barrels from Volquartsen a few years ago. They are really nice. I haven't checked out the Beyer barrels yet. Thanks. ..........Widder
Dakota Rebel, SASS# 58412 Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Both of my 10-22's are bone stock (except for scopes) and shoot way better than I can.
Widder, SASS #59054 Posted November 16, 2016 Author Posted November 16, 2016 Right now, mine can't shoot better than I can..... thus my quest to improve their accuracy. ..........Widder

You will have to recut the extractor notch in the barrel. Will turn a 4" group into a 1/2" group without changing the barrel. I have never bedded the barrel or receiver.

I used to reload my 6mm BR with the bullet Ogive about kissing the lands to achieve its top accuracy. Thanks JR. ..........Widder
The Original Lumpy Gritz Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 You need a match grade bbl and match grade AMMO to shoot tiny .22 groups. What are your goals with this rifle? OLG
Chili Ron Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 Howdy, Now that set back barrel is a new one on me. And Ive tried a lotta fun stuff wit dees. Best changes-beyer barrel, quick bolt release, picatinny rail extended with 20 moa lift. And if you like the little connector that attaches one mag to another to sorta give 20 round cap. Two thoughts on scopes: redfield crossbow 2-7x or burris 4-12 adjustable objective. I like 10 x for plinking out to 100 yards. A good friend likes 4-16. The 2-7 is new, very bright and easy to see all but the smallest targets. Look thru a variable set at 7 then set at 10 and you will see what I mean. Best CR ps heavy barrels can cause the aluminum action to crack as well. And I hear ruger wont replace them.......
