Captain Bill, I'm not sure but Ga. Slick will know. They are the guns Slick's Sharp Shooter used to win her world championship. I'll shoot Slick an email and ask him.

I heard back from Slick and he said they are Montados that came with the short barrels and Super Black Hawk hammers. And SSS won her buckerette world title using them. Hogleg put in the free spin pawl and slicked everything up.

Let me know if you want more pics and you are welcome to try them out at the next River Bend match.

These look perfect for my wife. Would you do 1400?

Let me see if I can replace them for that and I'll get back to you.

Were these Ruger Montados to start with? Do you still have the original Montado hammers?

They were born as Montados and were ordered with Super Black Hawk hammers, so, I do not have Montados hammers.

Thanks Rufus! If you still have them at RBRR I would appreciate a chance to handle them. Don't hold them for me though!

10-4 Capt. Bill.

You can't "order" Montados with SBH hammers from Ruger. Do the hammer spurs have checkering or serrations?

I never said they were ordered "from Ruger" with the hammers. Are you interested in the Montados?

You've changed the description of what you have a couple of times so I was trying to possibly help you out. It sounds like you might not know the difference between a Montado hammer and an SBH hammer. In a normal action job no one would change the hammers as they have identical profiles. The difference between a Montado hammer and an SBH hammer is that the Montado has checkering. Sorry, just trying to help.

I know the original owner and I am just relaying what he has told me. It is possible that he is not aware of what he bought. I made changes to my description as he filtered in new info. The hammers have checkering, so, I suppose they are Montados hammers.

It's true that I am not as well versed on Rugers as I am Colts and clones. The only change I made was the description of the hammers as that info came in, evidently it was wrong info. I stand corrected.

No prob, Larsen, but, you wouldn't believe the private messages I've gotten from people saying they aren't this and are that. Thanks for just trying to clarify.

Yep, you still have the original hammers and that verifies they are true Montados as they are the only Rugers that come with that hammer. Sorry, didn't want to butt in just wanted to help clarify things.

And the sass sets of regular vaqueros. Sorry, I just had to. Lol

Yep, I forgot about those. The SASS Vaqueros are easy to recognize as they have longer barrels than the Montado. The Montados all have 3 3/4" barrels. Here is a photo of the "Montado" hammer. The SBH hammer is identical except rather than checkering it has deep cut horizontal serrations. The cast in checkering on the Montado hammers is rather shallow. The deep serrations on the SBH hammers give a better grip on your thumb. The SBH hammer is the one in the middle in the lower photo.

MBFields, my shipping to your zip code is $15.00. So, if you're game, I'll take your offer for $1415.00 for the pair of Montados.

Lemme know,

Mr. Deal. These are not serrated and according to Anthony at Ruger customer service, whom I just spoke with, the Montados never came with serrated front straps. He said that would have been something done by a gunsmith.

Good for you. Maybe you should go to work for Ruger and head up Customer Service. Anyway, mine are not serrated. Thank you for your concern about whether they are ground pounder legal.

Posted

Glad yours are good. Would hate for them to not be and someone get penalized inadvertently at a match. I do enough customer service for my company, now. Would not want their job at Ruger...

Ha! I had about the same experience with Ruger customer service. My opinion, I love their single action revolvers(doubles not so much, nothing beats a smith). Unfortunately not only the service department is seriously lacking.

I ordered a pair of gallery of Guns exclusives 05126 which are essentially montados without the serrated front strap. When the came in, they didn't have the Crescent shaped ejector rod head. I called Ruger and told the guy I got a set of 05126 with the montado style hammer that escaped the factory without the right rod head. He said, so you got a sass set of revolvers? I said no they're montados. He said they can't be because only the sass set gets that hammer. We went back and forth and finally he went to his line lead and confirmed what I said. Then on to my problem he said those montados don't get a crescent shaped head. I quoted him the line on their website and he still argued that he wasn't responsible for what someone else's website said. Finally I sent him a screenshot of the Ruger website that said it does come with it while still on the phone. He then sent me a tag to ship them back. Think that's all? Nope. He called me back in a hour or so asking if I shipped them out yet and I said no. He said he checked with his line lead again and they're not supposed to get that rod head and Rugers site was wrong. We went back and forth another 30 minutes before he agreed to just send me two rod heads I can put on myself. Look on their site, it still says they come with them. The retail on these revolvers are like 933.00 each thats a hundred dollars more each than each one in the sass set. Sorry so long winded, I got hot when I read your problem with them. By the way it was Anthony that I talked to as well.

I hear ya, Tennessee. I don't really call my encounter a problem as I was just looking for info and not dealing with a special order. I agree, though. If they advertise something, they should stand by it. If the website is wrong, freakin' change it.

Of the Montado's I have seen and handled, they had serrations on the front strap.

I was told (unofficially) that if someone wanted to use them in a SASS match, they needed to either fill up those serrations or sand the front straps to make them smooth, like other Vaqueros.

Montana's were the big thing for mounted shooters because of the gripping ability (due to the serrated front strap) and the short barrel.

As to what someone at Ruger states over the phone, looks like communications between the Customer Svc Rep and the Assembly Craftsmen who built the Montado needs to improve.
