Sedalia Dave Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 37 Images Of The Massive German Flak Towers, Armed To The Teeth And With Room To Shelter Thousands The Flak Towers were eight complexes of large, above-ground, anti-aircraft gun blockhouse towers constructed in the cities of Berlin (3), Hamburg (2), and Vienna (3) from 1940 onwards. Other cities that used flak towers included Stuttgart and Frankfurt. Smaller single-purpose flak towers were built at key outlying German strongpoints, such as at Angers, France and Heligoland, Germany. They were used by the Luftwaffe to defend against Allied air raids on these cities during World War II. They also served as air-raid shelters for tens of thousands of people and to coordinate air defense. Note the radar dish in the background
Noz Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Did anyone else immediately think what a luscious target for a nice sized smart bomb.
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Don't think the bombs had been to school at that time, Noz. Or at least were undergraduates. A nice Bunker Buster would have worked, me thinks.
Badlands Bob #61228 Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 As civilian, I don't think I'd want to be taking shelter in an air defence command center. Sounds too much like Target. Give me a good deep subway and I'll be just fine.
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 The flak towers weren't high priority targets. with today's smart bombs I think they would be wiped out in minutes seconds but the bombing techniques of WWII would not have done significant damage.
