45acp Vaquero CC

there was a guy in Red Dawn with a 1911 but didn't last long against several russian soldiers. basically the thing that happens is what and when you did not anticipate it. in the name of fairness and equal rights everyone should cary an AR15 and call it a day.

Carrying an AR is a tad impractical for most folks. Tends to get hooked on passing shopping carts.

Israel citizens seems to manage carrying rifles in public places.

However, a short barrel & collapsible stock would help from entanglement if you are in a dense shopping cart area. :)

You'd think that if you're tacticool enough to carry an AR in a supermarket...there would be an absence of shopping carts to get hung up on. Unless of course your tacticoolness was so supreme that it caused others to abandon their shopping carts...

Do a google search on Israel citizens carrying semi/full? auto rifles in public. One picture shows a teacher escorting a class of grade school age kids around the streets. So, if that has been happening for years, all the places you mentioned wouldn't be out of question.

I have no idea at this time what qualifications a Israel citizen must have to practice the above carry method.

Everybody has choices to make. Way I see it, any firearm that is actually with you is better than a sharp stick or a firearm sitting in the desk drawer at home.

I carry a J-frame 38spl +p. Why? I can hit what I'm aiming at, it is light, powerful enough for the intended purpose and reliable. I sometimes carry a 1911 or a Hi Power or a Shield (9mm). No particular reason other than to carry something different. I can hit what I'm aiming at with any of these firearms.

My take on the Vaquero is they are excessively heavy to carry and offer no real advantage over other choices to trade off for the extra weight.

I'm not some super tactical invincible secret operative nor am I some ninja warrior. I'm just a middle aged guy who is a slightly above average shot who has been around firearms for 40+ years. I'm sure like most of the rest of us here. I'm not out looking to break up drug gangs or take on mafia hit men. Most likely scenario where I'd ever need a firearm is a junkie trying to rob me in a Walmart parking lot or a lunatic wanting to harm me some night at a lake after fishing. My choice of carry firearms is quite sufficient for the likely scenarios I may face. Should I face a drug gang or a cadre of mafia hit men, well, I'd probably end up dead regardless of how many bullets I was able to weigh myself down with.

If I could find a legal and comfortable way to carry a 12ga pump, I would carry a 12ga pump. So far, I have found no way to do that. Inside my home, the pump gun and a J-frame are what I have within easy reach. the shotgun is my first choice.

Again, my choices are right for me and choices with which I'm comfortable. May not be the best choice for someone else. The fact for me is the little Smith is with me all the time. Larger heavier guns most likely would not be.

The Israeli "civilians" you see carrying AKs, Tavors, and Galils are actually reservists and well trained.

CCW issus aside, my home defense weapon is a pistol, not a shotgun. The shotgun is a two handed weapon and in the close distances inside a home it's quite possible that you may find yourself within grabbing distance of a bad guy. If he gets hold of your long arm... you both dance until the stongest one wins. I prefer to be able to shoot with one hand at very close quarters.

UB,

Do you have any idea if the reservist rifle is semi-auto only or can they be full/burst select rifles?

Upon further Googling, I found that active service people on leave can take their service rifle with them to their home. So whatever style of rifle they are issued, is what they can take on leave. i am sure there are other restrictions and regulations that further clarify who/what/when/where an active service member of the military can use their weapon.

The Israelis you refer to are the "IDF", Israeli Defense Force.

Everyone serves in Israel, even women.

Google "IDF girls" if you want to see M16's carried in places that would make hitlery klinton implode.

They are ALWAYS armed.

They carry their issued select-fire rifle, and many also carry a handgun.

As far as I know, the IDF does not issue any semi auto rifles except to snipers. So if you see a young ladt carrying a Galil at the market, it has a fun switch.

OK, after listening to all the flak, a little background. I didn't know what OP meant either.

My original question was comparing a 6 round 45 acp Vaquero against a 6 or 7 round Shield or XD Mod 2 or Officers model 1911. My normal edc is a gen 4 Glock 26 with plus 2 mag and a backup G17 mag also, Big Dot sights, My alternate is an XDM 3.8 compact 45 with 9 round mag and 13 round backup mag.

I've got over 20 years shooting CAS and I thought the Vaquero would be as good or better a choice as the others. I go to the Texas hill country for 5 months in the winter to rv. The Vaquero would be an alternate for night letting dogs out or going to the rv rec room. No jamming issues like the other 3 semi autos, and a round I stock and like. Comments avout double actions or 5 shot j frames I discount because I wouldn't carry either. I'm not a complet idiot, just partially.

You seem to have made up your mind without involving much in facts.

A 5 shot j-frame with 'speed-strips' is much faster and easier to reload in the dark than a std. SA revolver. BTW-My J-frame is 357 mag, weights 17oz loaded with CT, LASER grip. It's a very good summer CC gun, fits very well in a pocket holster. Followed by my S&W Shield 9mm and then my Colt Commander .45acp that I only 'belt' carry.

If you're have 'jamming issues' with your semi-autos. You should look into the 'why' of that.

All that aside-Get what you want.......... ;)

I'm curious as to why you would not carry a DA revolver which pretty much replaced SAs for self defense many decades ago. I carry one. Does that make me a complete idiot?? :D

Just don't like the long trigger pull of a double action and the short barreled snubbies I've had didn't shoot as well either. Sold them when I got my Glock 26.

The idiot part of my post was about the whole comment and the fact that I didn.t want to replace my edc with a SAA. I just wanted an excuse to add it.

Howdy again,

After thinkin your situation over fer a while, it seems to me that the 45 Vaquero would suit you fine.

They just aren't too easy to conceal.

At a show a couple years back a old Colt in .44 with a cross draw holster and a belt full of ammo

was the 100 year old answer to your question.

A fella riding a horse could draw and fire that colt mighty quick.

Today we have a list of options he didn't have.

Doesn't mean his choice wouldn't work.

Ive been a LEO for 28 years, and If I actually thought I was going to get into a gun fight, Id carry a shotgun. Saying that I would advise anyone to carry the gun they are most proficient with. Personally I have a 45 Colt SA by my bed, but when I go out I carry my combat commander in 45ACP with a spare mag.

To each his own, carry what you feel comfortable with, and the heck with anyone elses opinion. Opinions are like you know what, everyone has one.

And remember a License to Carry (in Texas its not CCW) doesn't make you a LEO where in most states are REQUIRED to take some action, and unless your life or someone elses is in immediate danger, be the best dang witness you can be.
