Anyone Shoot a Spencer Rifle at EOT?

I don't see Sagebrush Burns on the list, but he'll often shoot his spencer for every other stage in a match

My first EOT I was fortunate enough to be on a posse with a gentleman from Arkansas named Choupique (sp). He fully understood how to have fun. He shot a Spencer, in 45 Colt I think. Also shot a Spencer shotgun, before they were banned. Some stages he had a 10 gauge Long Tom single shot he would use. I don't recall what else he employed, but he had a good time that's for sure!

We had a shooter at Bordertown, late last year, start shooting his. On the first or second stage something broke and he elected not to continue shooting. I do not recall his handle. Fine looking gun, but maybe the rifle was ill prepared for his loads or that much shooting.?? Not sure.

 

Just make sure you have a few spare parts and have shot it enough that you feel comfortable that the rifle and you will last for four stages a day.

Backup rifle(s) are always a good idea out there. That and backup pistols and shotguns!

I was wondering how you shoot a 7 capacity spenser in a 10 round match...

Load singles after 7 or one guy I saw loads 2 Blakeslee loaders with 5 rounds each. He was pretty good at it.

I was told I could not use another loader...that I would have to reload on the clock. Don't want to screw up at EOT....Yikes.... Jim

When I first started in SASS, more than 20 years ago, I sometimes shot an original M1860 Spencer carbine, .56-56. Made the brass from .50-70 brass, and used a .535" hollow base bullet. Used an S&S central fire breech block. Worked quite well. I've retired the carbine in deference to its century-and-a-half age. Thought about buying one in .44-40, but haven't had the "bread".

The reason is that carrying a spare "charged" Blakeslee loading tube would be the same as carrying a LOADED conversion cylinder to swap out in a revolver...NOT ALLOWED.

This was explained as a logical application of the "pouch" rules ... SHB p.11.
