It's just steel and wood. Nothing a proper wipe down won't take care of. I think the guys with white gloves holding an old gun is silly. YMMV

Wonder if Lawton actually packed it around. IIRC, Geronimo surrendered in '86, and if the rifle is actually the first production piece, it was probably chambered for the Army's .45-70. But the Indian Wars were over for the most part (Wounded Knee excepted, of course). So Lawton might have used it for hunting. I purely love the '86, but that would be a tad expensive for my budget!
