For style points what could be better for speed I think it should slow me down even more... Yeehaw Jim

Hoss Roonwright....gonna slow me down....love the style points though!

Just got a Spenser and I am so excited about it....

The was a gentleman a few years ago at the Siege of St Augustine shooting a Spencer. It was a lot of fun to watch. He had some kind of speed loader set up for the reloading of his remaining rounds. It seemed to keep the stage time reasonable as I recall. Good luck with the new rifle and have fun.

Jim, if you shoot that SPENSER with the big Hoss get him to take some pictures of you.He can post them or email them to me.

I shot CC a couple of times with my Spencer and 1887 Lever shotgun. Most of the posse thought there should be a special class for anyone shooting a Spencer rifle. I also shoot C&B in CC as well which usually gives me a good chance of finishing dead last for the shoot. The Spencer is a great rifle to bring out when time is not a goal. Enjoy the new rifle.

It's obvious you HAVE to get a 1887 lever shotgun to go with that Spencer rifle! Just so happens I have a Coyote Cap 87 for sale or trade.

I'm coming to Plum Creek on Saturday!

PBT, you trying to break my camera?

I saw one gentleman at a shoot with a Spencer full rifle. He used a blakesly box with spare tubes.

Still not real fast but it was a lot of fun to watch such a historic rifle.

Even makes me hanker for one.

Sure wish one could use a revolving rifle.

Nice talk Hosie...break the camera...nice talk...

I've used my 44-40 Spencer a few times with a Blaklee Box to reload....5 rounds in each tube. Great style points but ain;'t gonna win any speed trials!

Thanks for the kind words Grizz. Been running mine for about 8 years now in whatever category I shoot (age based or duelist) and having a great time. Instead of remembering how slow I shoot, people remember the Spence.

Here is a shooter at the FL state match in 2014 running a Spencer

The Spencer your getting runs a lot smoother than the one you you see in the above video.

See your PM some other info on your Spencer.

Thanks Grizz and Sagebrush....thinking the Spenser rifle is just what the doctor ordered....Nice shooting Sagebrush.... I will report back when I get the rifle....Jim

Wonder Why Mr. Spencer's Slide action Shotgun ain't approved for CAS as it is a much Stronger design than the Winchester 97...

And was around long before the Winchester ... And both are Ugly so that can't be the reason ...

When I had my Spencer I used a brass tube just long enough to hold three rounds for the reload. It was crimped at one end & with a cork in the other end.

I hope that your is not in .45LC!

Why not in 45 long colt?...

Posted

Cause there is NO such Cartridge !!!

.45 Long Colt is a modern Mis-nomer ...

My colt made in 1873 is marked .45 colts ,,, note no capital and an S ...

Semantics aside, the rim on the .45LC is too small to be effectively gripped by the extractor. I had a terrible time with mine and could only get it to work using extreme care not conducive to achieving much speed or consistency. It was probably a mistake for them to produce this gun in that caliber & I believe it may have been discontinued. I finally sold mine in frustration though I loved everything else about it. In .50 caliber I believe that they work much better. Your mileage may vary.

Yes. They are very sensitive to OAL given the feed system. More than other lever guns in my opinion.

Well first of all, neither the 97 nor the Spencer shotgun is ugly. Don't insult those who like them by saying so. :)

In fact, the Spencer shotgun is downright handsome. Has very smooth lines.

As to why the Spencer, (and the Burgess for that matter) is not SASS legal, is really very simple. To quote the handbook...

"The only slide action shotgun allowed is the Model 1897 Winchester shotgun, whether original or replica."

The Spencer, the Burgess, or for that matter the 93/97, are not a 97, they are therefore not allowed. It's a silly rule. It's a rule that should be changed. But I do not see it being changed anytime soon.

The Marlin and original 93's are not allowed for very real safety concerns, and I have no problem with that. But no such problem exists with those other ones.

We have a great cowboy who shoots the Spencer occasionally along with either an 8 ga or 10 ga double with hammers. Its a 56-50 Spencer and does not use the blackely tubes. Its a blast to watch him and anyone who knows him, knows he's not interested in what the timer says...
