Loophole LaRue, SASS #51438
I finally found a copy of my father's Honorable Discharge - May 3, 1946. There are some entries that I'm hoping you military folks can help me grasp: Among his duty stations (right after Naval Mine Warfare School), is "SERON FIVE" - is this a place, or an entity, or what? After service on board a minesweeper off Normandy on D-Day, he was transferred to the US Naval Air Base in Cherbourg; but then, the record shows "NTS...PMS...Princeton University, NJ". Now I know that he later went to Navy V-12 at Colgate, but what was "PMS"? Dad is still kicking...but his memory on certain things has some gaps. Appreciate the help. Bama Red
Loophole, SERON 5 would be Service Squadron 5. http://www.history.navy.mil/research/library/online-reading-room/title-list-alphabetically/u/us-navy-abbreviations-of-ww2/s.html
Bama Red
NTS could be: NTS -- Naval Target Sub-division (G-2, SHAEF) NTS -- Naval Torpedo Station NTS -- Naval Training School NTS -- Naval Training Station NTS -- Naval Transportation Service
Bama Red
When I was in, PMS stood for Preventive Maintenance Service (or System). I could not find "PMS" in the list of WWII Navy abbreviations. Hope all this helps!
Loophole LaRue, SASS #51438
Bama: Great info and sources...thanks! I always figured that "PMS" was some kind of school, given that it was at Princeton, and directly preceded the V-12 program. LL
