1897 Ejector

Can anyone tell me what is the best ejector for a Winchester 1897 and where to find it?

 

I want something that will thow a hull through the wall.

Therese lots of good 97 ejectors out there. Just as long as you don't get one from Numrich Gun Parts. There new replacement parts are usually junk. Remember for proper ejection, you need good extractors. Especially the left extractor as it needs the proper tension and hook shape. Make sure your left extractor doesn't have a broken tail. New ejectors are usually left proud and you need to file it to fit it. Same goes for the left extractor. Just keep in mind that an old Winnie 97 wont throw a shell like a modern day pump or semi auto shotgun would.

You mean is there an aftermarket rocket to tie onto the Win97 ejection system to make it function better that it was originally designed by John Browning and later, enhanced by Winchester engineers? I don't think there is.

 

What I suggest is that you study the extraction and ejection system to get a solid understanding of whether they are clean, lubricated,, unbroken or worn, installed correctly, properly fitted, honed and adjusted. It's also critical that, if you have a takedown model, that your Barrel is properly aligned with the Barrel Chamber Ring. All that, plus a couple other functions/features,must operate properly, in concert, to maximize Win97 shotshell ejection.

An original win97 throwing shells like you want isn't going to function very long. They're just not designed to be that "tightly wound". If you're getting shells being ejected cleanly and clear of the shotgun, it's functioning properly.

 

As Cat said, the design was never meant to throw shells into the next county, like a modern pump.

You might try the Smith Shop. They sell 1897 parts. I shorten all of my hulls 3/16" and since doing so have not had one single hull fail to eject.

Thank you all for the advice.

 

The fact is that I load right handed and I need for the shell to get out quick. Hitting the wall with the shell was an exageration that not everyone got. Today I was trying out my friends New 97 Cyote Cap and it was really throwing em out. I am just looking for something that I or a smith install to get my old Winny spitin em a little more solid.

To understand how to gain solid and very strong ejection of spent hulls from a worn out Winchester is an art in itself.

 

Your first project is to remove the carrier in order to be able to adjust the left and right extractors to work in harmony with the thickness (spring action) of the ejector spring.

 

If you have a problem, replace the left extractor wth an IAC, M-97cb (Cowboy Comp), coil spring left extractor, or convert existing extractor to coil spring operation - much easer to balance the left and right extractors if they are coil springs.

 

You can then adjust the ejector spring action by trial and error of several thicknesses of ejector springs. They can very from .018 - .032

 

Once you get the spent hull to fly across the room, (without the carrier installed), you are assured the extractors and ejector are correct

 

The carrier must be out of the gun and the slide, forearm and bolt need to be in the gun in order to be assured the timing of the carrier drop is correct and not interrupting the ejection.

 

If the bolt recoil block has two heavy wear marks on its rear face that matches two heavy wear marks on the carrier/bolt ramps, this condition causes the bolt to be fully to the rear, before the carrier can go down, (changing the timing)!

 

The bolt face will pass the ejector, striking the ejector stop block too early. The extractors will release the rim of the spent hull too early and the rim of the spent hull will contact the top of the carrier, spinning the hull and disrupting ejection, .

 

Without the carrier installed, ejection is strong and straight out of the gun, with the carrier installed, the spent hull will just barely clear the frame.

 

Because of the softness of metallurgy in Old Winchester 97's, they have only so much life, before you need to replace the bolt and carrier , slide and hook with the latest IAC parts that have been machined using modern (much harder and stronger) materials and CNC milling machines.

 

That is your answer.
