U.S. Sen. Inhofe Introduces NSSF-Backed Bill To Help Strengthen Ammo Manufacturing

NEWTOWN, CONN. --U.S. Sen. James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma) today introduced the NSSF-supported (placeholder Alternative Ammunition Manufacturing Act (S.2444) to help ensure ammunition manufactures gain the certainty needed to produce alternative types of ammo. The measure requires the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to issue a ruling within 60 days of receiving a waiver application, or else the application will be automatically granted.

"As we've seen in the past weeks, it is no secret that the president and his administration have been trying to chip away at the 2nd Amendment since he took office," Inhofe said. "One way they quietly found to do so is by refusing to act on manufacturers' applications for waivers to produce ammunition with materials prohibited under statute. With states outlawing popular ammunition materials, it is imperative that manufacturers are able to produce alternatives so citizens of those states can exercise their Second Amendment rights. The Alternative Ammunition Manufacturing Act is a bill that will ensure that the administration follows the law by requiring that it act on waiver applications within 60 days of receiving them. If they fail to do so, the application will be automatically granted ensuring that gun owners across America have access to needed ammunition."

In October of last year, Rep. Brian Babin (R-Texas) introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives (H.R. 3802, the Alternative Ammunition Manufacturing Act). The House legislation currently has 38 co-sponsors.
