NRA's Wayne LaPierre Challenges Obama to Debate on Guns

Wayne LaPierre of the National Rifle Association Wednesday challenged President Barack Obama to debate him on gun issues and vowed that the organization would fight his recent executive actions "more aggressively than we have ever challenged anything."

"I’ll meet you for a one-on-one, one-hour debate, with a mutually agreed-upon moderator, on any network that will take it," LaPierre, the association's executive vice president and CEO, said in a web post. "No pre-screened questions and no gas-bag answers.

"Americans will judge for themselves who they trust and believe on this issue: you or the NRA.

"Let’s see if you’re game for a fair debate," he added. "It’s your chance to show the American people you’re not afraid to meet the NRA on neutral ground."

LaPierre's dare follows Obama's town hall meeting on gun issues last Thursday at George Mason University outside Washington. The NRA declined to participate in the session and blasted the meeting throughout the night on Twitter.

He accused Obama of abusing "the runaway power of the executive branch over Congress, the courts, the people and the rule of law, the president has laid waste to the America we remember.

"Now, he has chosen what he misunderstands most about America — the Second Amendment, gun owners and the NRA," LaPierre said. "Against the will of Congress, and in defiance of our constitutional system, the president unilaterally decreed that anyone — any lawful citizen — who sells, trades or gifts even just one firearm, might be vulnerable to arrest and charged with a felony.

"When the law is a mystery, all that is left is fear," he said.
