Rye Miles #13621 Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 How far do you go out of your way save on gas?? For example, I was headed on the freeway yesterday and the gas station 3 blocks away from me and right off the freeway had gas for 1.87 Shell gas. I could have driven 4 miles back to get it for 1.79 at Speedway and then got on the freeway there. I filled up at Shell and got 10.6 gallons. I would have saved not quite a dollar had I gone to Speedway. So the question is ,"How far would you drive to save a buck? Alpo???
Wolfgang, SASS #53480 Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 whut duz it cust ya in time and fuel to go that 4 miles back ? . . . . .
Tyrel Cody Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 If it's along my route just backwards a bit I'd probably go 10 miles or so. I drive about 45 minutes to the office and have a couple of apps on my phone, so I can usually find a cheaper price somewhere on my way.

Rye Miles #13621 Posted December 1, 2015 Author Posted December 1, 2015 whut duz it cust ya in time and fuel to go that 4 miles back ? . . . . . Time to go 4 miles, a couple minutes and fuel? Well, I get about 30 mpg on my Buick Encore so it would be worth it money wise but to save $.80??? Not worth it!
Tyrel Cody Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 Oh so that's how you can afford to shoot black powder huh??? I save money any way I can sir. BTW, Mustang Lewis is about to quit shooting BP; he's getting faster every time out and thinks the BP is slowing him down.I told him it's his choice, it'll certainly be cheaper and easier on me, but he still has to clean his own guns.
Grumpy Old Man Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 We usually drive 20 miles to get gas. Nearest big town to buy stuff and sometimes 20 or more cents cheaper than local.
Alpo Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 For a while I was putting gasoline in my truck. Wanted to see if mileage was any better than with gasohol. It wasn't, but - there seem to be two stations in my town that sell gasoline. One is two blocks from my house. The other is a ten mile round trip. The far-away one's gas is about forty cents a gallon cheaper than the near one. Bear in mind that I figgered this out when gas was 3.10 and 3.50. My truck, in town, gets an amazing seven miles a gallon. That's one and a half gallons to make the round trip to the cheaper station. I have a fourteen gallon tank. Wasting 1 and a half gallons of the cheaper gas, on the round trip, costs me 4.50. I save 40 cents a gallon, and waste 4.50. So I break even at 11 and a half gallons. I got to be driving on fumes to make it worthwhile taking the longer drive. When I was a callow ute, my father lectured me on stupidity. I went to this one station where gas was a nickel cheaper. He explained to me that I had a ten-gallon tank, and got ten miles a gallon. I went three miles out of my way to get the cheaper gas. Burnt a third of a gallon of gas, to save, at the most, 45 cents. And that did not include wear and tear on the Scout, or tire wear. FALSE ECONOMICS, SON, FALSE ECONOMICS. What I do is check the website http://www.floridastategasprices.com/index.aspx?s=Y&fuel=A&area=Panama+City&tme_limit=36 and see where the cheapest gas is, and also where the cheapest CLOSE TO ME is. And i see where the best deal is, money-wise and travel-wise.
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 I just steal it from my neighbor. Feller got wise and switched to a green car. Dang it!
Blackwater 53393 Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 Ol' Green's tank holds 34 gallons and it get 9 - 12 miles to the gallon. I',m usually going several miles when I go and there are many places along the way where basis sometimes as much as $.30 a gallon cheaper. I usually drive out to the nearest place when I need fuel and get enough to reach a place where I can fill up on less expensive gas. On the way back home I'll top off again and thus have more fuel in the tank at less expense to me. At the consumption rate that Ol' Green operates, I seldom go out of my way to get cheaper gas! At $.30 a gallon and 34 gallons a tank full it works out to $10.20 if I coast in dry.
Springfield Slim SASS #24733 Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 If I have enough Safeway credits I will go to the Safeway gas station 5 miles away to save the buck a gallon. My truck holds 25 gallons, so I usually save 20 bucks or so. Otherwise no, time is too valuable.
Sedalia Dave Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 Back when I had a truck that had a 100 gal aux tank yes. With what I drive now, no.
Ramblin Gambler Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 Tyrel, what app do you use? I aint never heard of such a thing. Personally, I don't drive outta my way at all. For the most part, I have found that if I remember gas being cheaper down the road, the station down the road will have changed prices before I can get back. Also, I hate backtracking. Having to do it annoys the heck out of me. So even if I JUST saw the cheaper gas and could make it back in time before they changed it, I aint gunna do it. The only time I comparison shop on gas is when they're at the same intersection. Oh and also there's one that's reeeeeeal convenient that I avoid unless I'm running on fumes because they are always way too high.

There's something called Gas Buddy, but I don't know if that's an app or not?. It is accessible on the internet though.

Presidio Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 There's something called Gas Buddy, but I don't know if that's an app or not?. It is accessible on the internet though. Yep. Gas Buddy. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gbis.gbandroid Use it myself. For both gas and diesel pricing and locations near me. Real handy little app. You can find it on Google Play Store.
Rancho Roy Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 My truck holds 37 gallons and at times I've seen a 40 cent per gallon difference in diesel. If I'm running very low I'll back track to save $14..... In the car, that only holds 17 gallons, and I never see gasoline with much over a few cents swing in price, I won't waste my time.
