Boggus Deal #64218
As Texas Lizard said, it equates to 45-70. Sharp's labeled the guns by shell length instead of powder charge because there was more than one load for each length. A 45-2 1/10 could be a 45-70-500 or a 45-55-405. The lighter load for carbines and the heavier for rifles.
Butch McGie, SASS#71758
I read somewhere that the 45/55 load was developed for the cavalry. It is a 45/70 case with filler for the reduced powder charge. Seems as though a 45/70 load in a carbine would unseat some folks from their horse. Folks were smaller and lighter in the mid 1800s.
