Amatuer Radio SASSers

Although I spent nearly 40 years in the radio communications business, I never got a ham license. In those many years involved with two way radio I probably worked with and met hundreds of hams. Many of the communications devices and technologies in use today were the result of ham radio operators.

Appliance operator for donkey's years, fire and police, using professional two way radio.

Wasn't until I was out of that line of work for some time that I finally got off my backside and got my general ticket.

Absolutely delightful to hold conversation with the other side of the Atlantic on less power than it takes to light the bulb in your fridge!

Grid EN81we, QSO direct, you'll know it's my return envelope, I write in calligraphy as a matter of habit.

Most commonly on PSK31, my Suth'n accent seems to be somewhat confusing, or maybe it's because I don't speak English, I speak a mixture of dialect and colloquialisms, hi hi.

Me too. WB0ZDP

I learned code by listening to broadcasts over a B-29 salvage radio. Owner took it back when I passed the first test. Probably weighed 45 pounds.

You bet! KK5FE here! I haven't been active in a while... Used to be one of those DX chasers for a while. But my love of old tube radios started me down a different HAM path. I'd get old tube radios and transmitters, restore and use them on the AM HAM bands. Lots of fun.

I'll have to dig up a photo of that equipment and post it here...... :)

I've considered it from time to time, and if money ever lets me, I may consider again, but I have enough hobbies to keep me busy

Congrats Stubborn Dutchman. Thank you to all who have responded. I will keep an ear pealed listening for you all. I run a Kenwood TS 520SE or an Icom IC 718 through a G5Rv strung between two trees about 35 feet up.

I got my Tech license a year ago. KD2HQV

Two days ago I passed the test for my General! :D:D:D

Glad to hear it.

I was asked to become a Volunteer Examiner earlier this year because I have an Extra class license and LAUREL VEC in my area is in need of more Extra class VEs. So I agreed and completed the paperwork. Last Saturday we had an all day review of the Technician class exam followed by a testing session. Had 31 people show up and 27 pass their exam. :):excl:

Made me 3 hours late for supper but boy was it worth it. I was really surprised at how many people turned out. Made me feel good to know Ham Radio is still generating interest.

Ok.. found the photo... its from maybe 1998 or so? Lots of great tube stuff! My favorite was the military R-390 that I rebuilt. That thing could hear anything on a piece of wire. My favorite transmitter was the Johnson Valiant just to the right of the 390

BTW I see call sign license plates at almost every shoot. I think both SASS and Amateur Radio attract similar like minded people.
