DocWard Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 I was talking with my oldest daughter, another history buff, the other day. She pointed out how things would've been different if the Yorktown (CV-5) had been sunk at Coral Sea, had not been able to leave Pearl Harbor in the time allotted by Nimitz to engage in the Battle of Midway, or even if she had been sunk when the Japanese thought they had, instead of getting under way again. It seems she led just enough of a charmed life to turn the tide.
Trailrider #896 Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Amazing footage. Most of the time we see some of those scenes in black & white. Interesting to see them in color. Navy damage control did a superb job in saving the ships that were hit by kamikazis off Okinawa...especially the Franklin. The Battle of the Phillipine Sea just about destroyed the Japanese navy. As shown, the cost to the Japanese naval air force was so high it became known as "The Marianas Turkey Shoot". God Bless all those then, and those who are in Harm's Way today in defense of our freedom. R.I.P the Marine aviator who "went in" today in England in his F/A-18!
