The concerns of some regarding militarization of the police, and/or wasting of Fed money and resources on unnecessary equipment, went largely unnoticed.

 

The concerns of others regarding what kind of equipment they may encounter in the streets seems to carry more weight.

 

I can understand tracked vehicles, rocket launchers, .50 cals. and camo; but batons and shields? Isn't that basic riot control gear? What will a row of cops, facing a mob, now use?

Used to be you'd see one every day or two in the papers, now it's every paragraph or two.

They may happen more often, but so few people read the papers these days that the errors are still caught less often. I can't say I'm against police departments having stuff like that, but they should have to justify it, preferably to the public. And personally, I'm having a hard time imagining how you justify tracked vehicles. Camo doesn't seem out of line. The high powered rifles thing made me laugh. Are we going to require cops to shoot 22 rifles from now on?

In all seriousness, it may be because their primary language isn't English. Many newspapers have sent their copy and layout work offshore to cut costs so who knows what you'll get.....

I think Forty Rod nailed it. Both my son and his wife started in newspapers and during their relatively short careers, staffs were gutted. In the rush to put content online, few have the resources to proof, edit or even fact check.

I agree, where it used to be the rare typo here and there, now it is becoming a rare occurrence to find an article, or even a motivational poster without a typo or other grammatical screw up. As for the police thing, it appears the pendulum is swinging all the way back to the other side where the cops are outgunned and barely hanging in there.
