Abilene Slim SASS 81783 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Big deal. I've had tinnitus for decades and hear these critters 24/7/365 a year. WHAT... ? Did he say, "Stay tuned for the nudes at 10:00?" Article
Aunt Jen Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Is tinnitus reduced by lowering salt and stress in the diet?
Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Well Jen, I don't know 'bout salt and stress or any other dietary factors, but I can tell you for sure ONE cause of over forty years of tinnitus (as well as permanently wiping out multiple frequency ranges): That would be having Hank's brother sneak up behind ya late at night out on the ranch, and touch off a Smith and Wesson Model 29 forty-four mangle'um next to one's haid... That'll do it every time! Huh??
Aunt Jen Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 That sounds louder than Superman---- Oh. Can't say that.
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 And I thought that was classical music I hear all the time. Dang, another illusion destroyed.
Panhandle Paladin Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Smith and Wesson model 29, .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world (at the time), it'll blow your head clean off, now what you gotta ask yourself is do I wanta lose my hearing? WELL, DO YA? PUNK!
Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Smith and Wesson model 29, .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world (at the time), it'll blow your head clean off, now what you gotta ask yourself is do I wanta lose my hearing? WELL, DO YA? PUNK! I can assure you, Panhandle, it wasn't my idea. But I can also assure you he never did it to anyone again... Nope, I didn't do anything - I was too busy writhing in the dust holding my head - it took me to my knees. But his "little" brother Hank wasn't amused... and gave him a taste of his own medicine... with a .300 H&H. Not deaf, but a permanent hearing deficit from that moment on, with periods of tinnitus that arrive unannounced.
Panhandle Paladin Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 I would say, I hear ya, but I got my tinnitus from loud irrigation engines, hot rods with no mufflers, loud heavy equipment and, wait for it, shooting big caliber guns with no hearing protection! Yes, when I was a young waddy I was sure I was 10 feet tall and bulletproof. I have since learned that there ARE indeed horses that cant be rode and cowboys that CAN be throwed!
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Guns, helicopters, racing engines, machine shops, drop hammers, getting hit in the head, etc. has left me with damaged hearing and tinnitus. I quit smoking about 16 years ago and the tinnitus got better, but not gone by a long shot and is always there in the background. I haven't had a cluster headache since I quit, either. Not going to get on any soapboxes or pulpits about smoking, but quitting worked for me
Four-Eyed Buck,SASS #14795 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Say again? The ringing covered you up
BLACKFOOT SASS #11947 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 When is was in the army hearing protection was not used except in and around loud aircraft. My time in Korea with a howitzer batallion and time at the Artillery and Guided Missile School left it's mark on my hearing. Blackfoot
Cypress Sun Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Loud music, guns and 37 years in construction did it for me. Should have worn ear protection early on but didn't. I try to tell the younger people in the trade to wear protection but they don't listen.....in 30 years, they won't be able to. When I'm in a crowd of people talking, like a restaurant, I can't understand what anyone is saying.....even if they are seated next to me. Drives my gal crazy. CS
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 8" howitzers will also do it every time. Yeah, them too.
Abilene Slim SASS 81783 Posted May 18, 2015 Author Posted May 18, 2015 .....even if they are seated next to me. Drives my gal crazy. What? Al is crazy? Who's Al? My friends now know my hearing is s**t in those environments so they just let me smile and nod as if I know what's being said.
JudgeBagodonuts Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Last year was the big year for Cicadas in Pennsylvania. While the incessant buzzing was a little unpleasant at times, my dogs weren't phased by the sound at all. In fact, they were eating any Cicadas that showed themselves on the porch where the dogs nap. After I saw one dog crunching one and then swallowing it, I looked it up. Apparently, once you're through the outside shell, the inside tastes like chicken. After finding that out, I laughed as the dogs chased the little guys around the deck and ate them.
Sawyer Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 As a young combat infantryman in Vietnam, I didn't have time to worry about hearing loss. Now 50 years later, I just can't believe that my government did not provide eye and ear protection!!

Utah Bob #35998 Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 I like cicadas. They make me feel normal. But we don't have em around here.
Birdgun Quail, SASS #63663 Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 Back in my early days in the Army, nobody worn hearing protection. (Bows, spears, and catapults didn't make that much noise. )
