This sign will cause you to stop and ponder.....

I can't personally vouch for that particular sign ...... but ..... I've actually seen a road sign exactly like that one. Real weird. Was running back roads in California's central valley on a motorcycle. Didn't stop to ask why.

One stencil, one can black spray paint.

A few years back we had someone modify the "Deer Crossing" signs around here by inserting a doe under the stag. Looked pretty professional.

Now Joe... time for the "Friday California Deer Biology Lesson." :)(Not to be confused with the "red stag" of Europe and North Africa)

From an old California deer hunter:

Some interesting info on castrated deer.

I recently attended a sportsman's show in LA where they had some unusual CA deer racks on display. They claimed they were stag deer. I know what stag means. These folks also claimed stag deer don't drop their antlers each year.

I'd never heard of this. I posted a few requests for info on another topic in this forum and got interesting replies. See "Dropped antlers".Anyway I decided to email our state (CA) fish and game to see if they had any info. This is the reply I got. I thought I'd post this as separate topic since this is a little known fact.

It's true - without the testicles (or if they are so severely damaged as to not function) the hormones are not produced normally which cause antlers to drop, so they just keep growing year after year in some rather odd shapes. When I was stationed up in Lassen County, we had reports on several deer like this and figured that they probably got damaged jumping over a fence but we never found out. Most of the really strange looking non-typical racks are probably from deer like this. Feel free to contact me with any other questions and I'll see if I can get them answered.

'Tain't recommended.

Anyway, gives one an entirely new look at the use of the word "stag."

The late Sgt McDermott had been the quintessential deer hunter in his lifetime; the rafters in his garage had been reinforced, yet still sagged under the weight of antlers collected during an active hunting career.

And indeed, there were a few sets that were very weird. Bizarre, even. Stags.

Soooo, I am guessing that a STAG PARTY is sorta of a misnomer?

Well... I doubt you'd find me or you there...

Sorta reminds me of the two bulls in a pasture, looking at some heifers in the pasture on the other side of the bob wore fence. The young bull says to the old bull, "Lets jump the fence and go get 'em!" The old bull agrees, but as they try jumping the fence, the old bull gets his "equipment" hung up in the wire and loses them. The young bull looks at his woebegone compadre and says, "Well, now you're a consultant!" :o
