View on Google Maps There are four Constellations located here along with other planes. Air Force One is the only complete Constellation in the group of large planes. It is the farthest east. Ware, Jr. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_F._Ware,_Jr. Para. 3 under Biography.) was the man who did that plane, Lockheed Skunkworks, for President Eisenhower. He also made Columbine III for Eisenhower as well. Of course, Kelly Johnson designed the Connie, but Joe was the flight test engineer on the connies who stretched them, used Howard Hughes' old Connie, Serial # 1961, as a test bed fo everything from radomes to engines... I hope someone ( or Corp) can pony up the 1.5 Mil to restore it and get it inside a hanger. To me, the stretched Connie was the most beautiful multi-engine aircraft ever built! I've been inside one, and watched it take off. Noisy as hell. Very little room inside which was another reason it was a sales dud. Beechcraft bought them all back to avoid the product liability trail as I recall. Surprised this one is on the desert. Thought they had been destroyed or otherwise rendered unsalvageable. Outside, it was noisy, also, when they went by. I saw a Starship at an airshow once, and was REALLY impressed. DANG but it was pretty!! I don't recall it being any more noisy than any other turpoprop, and being a pusher, one would expect a lower noise level inside. It was a neat aeroplane... but a victim of the times: "Beech sold only eleven Starships in the three years following its certification. Beech attributed the slow sales to the economic slowdown in the late-1980s, the novelty of the Starship, and the tax on luxury items that was in effect in the United States at the time.
