Ray, they actually did and still do in Israel. While stationed in Israel with the Israeli Ministry of Defense in 1980, I felt right at home siting in a theater with a young trooper next to me and an M-16 between his legs watching the show. It was normal to see troops at the sidewalk with their service weapons. Israeli citizens assigned to our joint project normally carried pistols in their bags. Only us US troops were prohibited from caring weapons. I guess they were not sure of our proficiency. Sagerider

By the way, it was not healthy to attempt to take one of these exposed weapons away from its owner.

They can petition all they want but I just don't see it happening in Europe.

Probably not yet, but I have a feeling that Charlie Hebdo will not be the last we hear of the bad guys.

Oh of course not. Attacks will continue. But the EU citizens will have to carry illegally if they want to protect themselves. Just look at the centuries of history in Europe. Monarchies and dictators have ruled the people. Even with democratically elected governments nowadays, the thought that the government is in charge and only they can protect you is deeply ingrained. They think our laws allowing carrying of guns are insane. There are of course exceptions, but they are not in government. I would be shocked to see any of those countries relax their gun control laws.

Ray, your post was more than plain. And, mine is as well. While the Jews and other citizens of Europe may never have the will to defend themselves against terrorism by personal responsibility, some already do! And, those in Europe do not even have to look as far as the US for a positive example. The typical citizen in Israel is far better prepared for their own personal defense and as a unified country than we in the United States. Sagerider

There is a reason that terrorists in Israel use suicide bombers instead of gunmen. They quickly learned that a gunman would be dead before he could change magazines. A bomber usually does not fail his mission.

Sage rider, did you read this reply? I'm talking about Jews in Europe, I don't get what your trying to say! If people are carrying in Europe they're doing it illegally, this rabbi is trying to change that. I know you're a big expert on this but I think you are confusing what the article is talking about!

Ray, while I am well past my prime, my ability to read and comprehend is still fairly intact. Yes, the Rabbi was requesting the European Union allow Jews in Europe the ability to arm themselves. My comment was simply to reply that if allowed, they need look no farther that their brethren in Israel for a positive example. I do not have to be a big or little expert on this to see the application. Sagerider

Thanks for the clarification, I admit I was a bit confused. ;)

Oh and it's RYE not Ray!! <_<

Rye, sorry for the Ray and the confusion. Happy days with smoke and flame!! Sagerider

I suspect the Jews of Europe are more likely to follow the example of their fellow Jews in Israel and arm themselves than the average EU citizen, who will sit and wait on their government all the while deriding those "gun crazy Americans" for our willingness to arm ourselves and see to our own protection. It is the clear difference of centuries of being a subject versus being a citizen or being governed versus ruled. Wasn't it Valerie Jarrett who said Obama would be ready to rule from day one?
