Hypothetical what if

I've been in CAS for two years now and I was thinking about what I needed to get ready going into 2015. Thankfully I am only looking for two guns this year since I have been on a buying spree for the last two. The money I have spent on main match guns, backups for those guns, the work that has been done to those guns. All of the guns for side matches and Wild Bunch. C&B guns for the Holy Black. I'm waiting on my third rig to be made, a custom one that the other two lacked. A custom Wild Bunch rig that I think is perfect so hopefully no more there. A new gun safe to hold all of those guns. The reloading equipment to feed the beasts that I now own and they eat a lot real fast. The cowboy duds because I might miss but I want to make sure I look good doing it. The cart to carry those guns.

Well, you get the picture by now.

We all know what we have spent in this sport but do you ever wonder what you could have done with that money if you didn't get involved?

I could probably have built a really nice shop and be in the process of building some Mopars. Maybe I would have settled down and thinking about starting a family.

Hey, I said it was hypothetical.

Money could have been wasted on fripperies like shelter, food, etc.

Lacey and I... when we first got together...

Well... She asked me if I wanted a motorcycle..

She wanted me ta have it if I wanted it...

I told her my bike ridin days were over for me..

After a few years I got interested..then she got interested.. In cowboy shootin'..

With all the stuff ya mentiond.. Including the stagecoach we haul our stuff in (yeah..we bought a used stagecoach)

I've told her many a time..

"We still don't have the price of a new Harley spent yet..

Rance

Thinkin' I ain't go no black powder guns tho...

I started this game wanting a set of tuned Rugers, Uberti 73 and the fastest scattergun of the day, plus a set of original guns. Six years later, I have learned that original Colts that I have afforded were too worn to shoot well, but original long guns are available for Uberti prices. Today I shoot Ruger OMVs and original long guns. I can buy Winchester 73s and 92s for less than a Uberti, shoot it for 2-3 years and sell it for more than I paid. Shotguns are a break-even prospect for me.

I think that I only money that CAS has cost me is reloading supplies (I already reloaded) and the cost of attending matches. Cheap fun indeed!!

Funny you ask  as I was talking with my brother about that exact thing the other day. P.S......mopars? I already like you haha. Anyway, the amount we have spent on guns and the accoutrements for the guns and reloading stuff etc. Easily a new car....moreso him than me. I am engaged now, so the gun buying is behind me for a bit of a stretch, happy I got them whilst single! So I think this idea of buying a house with the future lovely missus would be much much easier had I not spent what I have spent on guns over the last few years. Then again, I have this very distinct feeling that I would've found another way to spend the money that was apparently burning a hole in my pocket....who knew that fire in the pocket was ignited and fanned with gunpowder?!

My pockets aren't as deep so haven't put near as much into it as most.

I wouldn't change a thing if I could, and ain't gonna even ponder a guess what the money would have gone to, nothing that brought me as much joy and fun and friendship that is for darn sure.

As Grizzly Dave says it was money well spent. The friends I have made since finding this sport are priceless. I've been involved in other so called clubs and associations and none of them have provided me with the friendship and commeraderie that CAS has.

Tex, I love the Mopars! I've got a 65 Coronet that needs some attention and a 94 Dakota that is begging for a wild cammed 408 stroker.

Yul, I've met a lot of great people in this sport that I probably would have never had the opportunity to meet.

Have been into dirt bikes, sailing, 4 wheeling off-road, and cowboy action shooting. All cost money, but have been in CAS the longest. All the money spent on guns and reloading equipment was worth every penny in the fun we had and the new friends we made. In addition, if ever necessary, the guns are worth at least what we paid for them, if not more.

I started out with nothing. I had all hunting guns and I didn't even reload. Fortunately the person that got me into this, Doc Fillem, let me borrow some pistols and found me a rifle and shotgun here off the Wire. I've since been pounding the pavement hitting gun shows, pawn shops, auctions, gun broker, etc for guns. I haven't even hit the big bucks for a press yet because I'm still using a Lee single stage press. Dillon isn't even in my vocabulary yet. I bought some guns because I couldn't find what I wanted at the time but when I did, I sold the lesser gun. I took a loss on two of the guns but I needed room in the safe. We aren't even talking about the money that has yet to be spent because I'm starting to look at getting a third safe now, just to keep my ammo.

I went into this trying to spend as little money as possible but it has just exploded. I think I am finally starting to see the light and maybe I can get that lift kit for my truck this year.

I would probably own a late 60's or early 70's CUDA or Duster 340.

I've owned both in my previous life and would more than likely have become involved with them again ifn my interest wasn't in Cowboy shootin.

Cool. I had a 68 340 cuda S, a 69 cuda 340 and a couple of 70 340 Swingers(I preferred the sleeper look of the Darts) My current Viper powered truck (SRT10) has working AC though! :P

No. I know where it would have went.

Have been into SASS for 10 years or so.

And have spent more on my horses in the last few

years than all my SASS guns and the wife's added together.

So I know it would have just went towards that. AND they keep costing.

I can always put the guns in the safe and they don't cost anything sitting there.

Can't do that with the horses. They are always a cost to keep. But. We have always

had them. And always will.

Hobby's cost. No matter what they are.

My boat would be bigger. But same amount of fun. My truck would be newer. And drive down the road like my older one. My guns would be modern semiautos -and hit less a lot faster than my CAS guns. And I would be a lot poorer indeed for not having met all my friends thru CAS. Screw the money.

No hypotheticals there!

Spend discretionary capital on something other then shooting, blasphemy!

There is a man who shares my convictions :D

Note: I consider the single malt scotch and fine cigars that follow the match to be part of my shooting expenses ;)

My money would have been spent on more 41 mags. That was my toys or thew moment when I ran across SASS. I love the caliber and there are some super wildcats out there that cost way more than a '66.

This is definitely not a cheap sport, coming from mounted shooting I thought I had what I needed to jump right into CAS. Oh no, I still need a shotgun belt, loading strips and allot of ammo. ( I see why 38s are popular, ammo is half the cost of 45s). But I have 45s so I will use those. Good thing I have 2 sets of guns, finding that my old montados are illegal cuz they have grooves on the front strap. That was nothing, I needed a gun cart, holy cow they are expensive no non existenant where I live. So I built one. Any way I always see people wondering why more new people don't shoot. It's expensive to start. Thank goodness I have guns, boots, gun leather, clothing and hats. But the most confusing thing was choosing a category, but I elected to start as a 49er. No matter what the cost I am in to play, so I guess I will fit in with you all, damn the cost lets play !!!!

When I was twenty a friend had a bumper sticker

" he who dies with the most toys wins"

Words to live by. I've had a few hobbies and I usually go in deep. Sold some stuff to start new hobbies but there is still plenty of other toys around here when the shooting slows. But by far I've made more friends doing this than all the rest put together.

If I didn't spend the money on CAS equipment, the money would have gone to a new FN SLP shotgun and parts for my Ducati.

It's all relative.
When I think about what I spend - this month bought a 686 used, holsters for CAS for next year, 3000 bullets and 2000 once fired brass and lights for my dillon - and I think I'm spending a lot I just have to chat with a car or bike 'hobbyist' to realize it's chump change.

A friend put a new engine in his mustang...$5800.
another bought tires and wheels..$2800.
A harley still costs $12-15k, give or take. Plus then you spend on chrome, leather and more.
I know a couple of guys that race dirt bikes..getting older now and not competitve anymore, but $6k every 2-3 years for a new bike, plus mods, plus tires (4 sets a year min).
A customer of mine was saving up to put new injectors on his King Ranch pickup...$2500. With the other mods he's done figures he'll have 800hp.

Guns appreciate at best and never lose value at the worst. Can't say that about bikes and cars.

This sport is pricier to get into than most gun sports, but still dirt cheap compared to say, oh, flying, boating or owning a camper (we got one of those..$150/month plus insurance plus tires every 3 years plus lots o gas when we use it plus campground fees...)

CAS isn't that expensive...those that think it is, what other sports have you competed in to use as a basis for your opinion?

And for some...at least the cost of this game didn't include the cost of a SASS membership.

And to answer the question - probably woulda got into some other shooting sport.

Of everything I've done, diesel hot rods was definitely the best way to throw money away.

But there's still something about making an over 40,000 lb sled do 25-30 mph within 100 feet on dirt. In a pickup. That'll make anybody grin.
