Non-CAS - Optic for AR 15

Recommended Posts

So...I picked up a S&W M&P 15FT (I live in a "compliant" state.....)

Shot it to day for the first time; I really like this gun.

But I'm going to need some optics help past 50 yds.

I own two scopes - a standard rifle scope on a 10/22 and a red dot Burris on a Beretta carbine. So all of these other options - ACOGS, illuminated reticles, etc. - really have me spinning. I'm not soldiering, not anticipating close-quarters combat, and not shooting coyotes at 600 yrds. Basically, I want to see paper targets clearly out to 200 yrds. or so.

Any suggestions? Top of the budget is probably $400-$500. And I prefer American made.

Gracias.

LL

I would suggest a Bushnell AR Optics 1-4 X. It has a 30 mm tube and 24 mm objective. It is on sale at Midway for $199 ($99 off). I own one of these and they are really nice scopes...the best you're going to do at your price point. The 1x makes it as versatile as a red dot for close targets while the 4x meets your criteria of seeing clearly at 200yds.

Howdy,

Pard have I got the scope fer you.

A redfield revenge 2-7 with crossbow reticle.

Goes for a bout 150 give take depending on what discount you can find.

I was told about it by Beyer, the guy who makes those neat little 10/22 aluminum barrels

with steel insides. The crossbow marks can be used for closer in targets.

I case you don't know Leupold bought Redfield and this is one of the NEW scopes.

Only regret is that I didn't get more rounds downrange before the cold and snow hit.

And I haven't tried it at 200 yet. 200 is long for a .22, pard.

Best

CR

ps they have a longer one for varmints that is about in the low end of your range.

Lots of good scopes out there. 1X4, 1.5X5 are great scopes for the ranges you want to shoot. Get in the habit of keeping the scope on the lowest magnification. Someday that habit will keep you from missing that trophy buck. I know from experience and have a lot of friends that jumped a buck at 25 to 50 yards, raised their rifle and with the scope on high mag all you see is a blur. By the time you fix it the shot will be gone.

Stay away from the BDC reticles . They are a gimmick unless you have one custom made for your rifle / reload combination. Change either and you have to start all over.

Mil dot scopes are also not needed for 99.9% of hunting situations.

Go here http://www.chuckhawks.com/mpbr_hunting.htmand read up on Maximum Point Blank Range and then sight in your scope accordingly. Takes the guess work out of where to aim when hunting.

ACOG

Here's what I use in green.

With my LASER sight

With the above sights-I'm on target from inside the house to 800yds without sight adjustment, either day or night.

I have a 'white-light' mounted also.

Good folks to deal with here

ACOG, BDC are mil issue and 'rite-on' for there distances.

ACOG reticules are also 'ranging reticules, so you know your target's distance and the correct sight placement.

A 4X ACOG, is mighty useful to older eyes too. ;)

I just put a Bushnell 3-12 AR Optics on my Tikka T3 Tactical .223 and it's a good starter scope, especially since it was under $200 at Cabela's: http://www.bushnell.com/tactical/rifle-scopes/ar-optics/2-12x-40mm

At some point I may put a far more expensive scope on the rifle, but there are other projects that have a higher priority on the play budget.

The Leupy 1.25x4 Firedot.

I'm amazed by the contrast and clarity of the scope. And the Firedot is great for quick acquisition, just like a red dot.

As 'Muricans, we're always putting too much magnification on top our rifles. Bigger isn't always better.

He'll come around, after he looks through one- ^_^

I've looked through one or two.

Then I looked through my wallet.

I'll get one if the North Koreans make it as far as Salt Lake City. ;)

The one I have, was a gift from the Mrs.

The clarity of the ACOG, is simply amazing.

Easily, on par with my Nightforce scopes.

My Mrs. doesn't have a budget that would support that :D

Many thanks to all for the recommendations.....

I went with the Leupold VX-2 (Thanks, UB and jrswanson); Optics Planet had the matching Leupold mount for $50 (1/2 price), and chopped off another 11% of the whole order - bringing the total to just about $300 for scope and mount with free shipping. Good deal, good warranty, good features.

The Nikon M223 was close; specs were almost identical, but it was backordered, and I was itchy.

Gunner - check your link; http://m.acog.org is not about ACOG sights - it's an association of OB-GYNs. That's one place where I do not need help. :o:D

The ACOGs and other holographic/prismatic/illuminated reticle models are sure neat; but to get what seems like good quality, I'd need to spend twice the value of the rifle, and in most cases, sacrifice magnification. As Dad always says, "Moderation in all things, Son".

The input was greatly appreciated.

I have found this outfit to beat many of O/P prices.
